DIY : fixing noisy starter motor for good.

Featured Replies

2 weeks ago I was sick and tired about the noisy starter (OE BOsch) motor,so I decide to clean and lube it,the usual stuff...but after no more than 3 days, the noise was back...the silence lasted 3 days.

Ok,this is serious,so I decided to remove the starter again and look closer to the cause of the noise.

conclusion:

So...this bush has an inner side covered in raylon, this coat of raylon is pealing and cause the bendex to create drag, the result is lazy starter plus the specific noise.

You can easily replace this bush with a new one, from Bosch too ,I paid about 4 pounds for it.There is the code.

The bush has a cut,so is very easy to remove, just tap it with a 22 tube wrench and a small hummer,I've done that in my kitchen.

Adittionaly you can buy this seal,my old one was chapped,to prevent dust coming inside the bendex. This is 2.5 pounds.I don't have the code for it.

Do not use excesive grease to lube the inside gear, the lube will end up in the rotor, and on the magnets...you don't want that.A thin coat of lube will do the work

I recommand to block this whole to avoid dust coming inside,I used some sealant.

So I fixed the noisy starter with less than 7 pounds.

My starter is the original 11 years old...and is in very good shape,so just because is noisy I refused to swap it with a new cheap aftermarket one.

Parts from my trusted local shop. They can provide me any part of any car.

ah kk will have to look around and see if i can find somewhere that will do that cant think of anyone besides eurocarparts atm

Just to add to this, in case anybody is intending on doing the same...

The bendix drive itself should ONLY EVER BE SPRAYED WITH SILICON. Whether that be to clean, OR to lubricate. Anything else will perish the rubber that is inside the drive and problems will begin to surface very soon if you've dried it out. Any solvents are a particularly bad idea, as it will reduce the silicon content of the rubber itself, and it will begin to break down.

I don't know any rubber inside the bendix

Certainly is in old fashioned types. I spent 9 years of my life overhauling starters, alternators, motors, pumps and magneto's, and this is rule no. 1 when doing starters. VERY important.

The bushing is part 02B 911 257 G

Ok,ok,but where is the rubber inside the starter motor of 1.8T?

let me help you

there are 3 bushes to keep the gear plastic housing in place. They have no "crucial" job.

and this seal:

Aha, well, that isn't a bendix type at all then.

Whereas this...

Remember, I'm talking about the drive, not the motor.

is the same design as this

Then it should only ever be lubricated or cleaned with silicon spray, as I said. As most overhaul manuals for starters will tell you. (I still have some teledyne-continental, delco-remy, electrosystems, kelly aerospace, and lucas manuals kicking about somewhere)

IulianE,

Its that time of year again, I noticed if the outside air temp drops to near 10degC then my starter motor starts to growl on initial start up. (In the summer its good as gold no noises).

I have taken it out once and stripped it down cleaned everything and re-greased it, everything was fine for a few months then it started all over again. So it was with great interest that I read this post about replacing that coated bush, for what it costs deffo worth a try.

Today I did a search on ebay and found a uk supplier and ordered one (£3.39).

The second part you changed, the blue bush, do you have a Bosch part number for it and where does it go?.

My final question is, are they both easy to get to and change?.

Cheers

Yes,my starter was the same....noisy when temp dropped below 8 deg.

If cleaning and lubing don't fix it is time for the bush replacement, that will fix it for good

That bush is a seal and it isn't blue (is the camera effect) is brown ,and you can clearly see it in my first post, last picture. It prevents dust coming inside the bush.Unfortunately I don't have a code,it was delivered naked without a cover.

The best option is to remove your starter and you'll find a code written on it,use that code to find this seal.

Your last question is hard to answer,I'm an auto technician so is very easy for me,I don't know your skills. For an amateur in my oppinion is a 3/10 job.

Good luck!

Thanks Iulian,

part is expected to arrive this w/end, that seal sits on top of the bush yes?
