vrs front spring snapped today

Featured Replies

My octy's front left spring has snapped today. It was making a nice creaky noise and when ive checked i pulled out the snapped piece.

Ive read that best bets are to replace with standard but cant get them til the end of the week. Im wondering how safe it is to drive the car in the meantime. The peice approx 3/4 of a full turn (about 6 inches long)

Entirely upto you, I know what I (wouldnt) do.

The more i think about it the 3 miles home then only to the garage after that seems best!!

No way José, I'd even consider a mobile mechanic to come to you. But as said, on your head be it. If you should need to take evasive action on your short journey for some reason you could be right up the swanny.

Watch out to as the aftermarket springs for these can often be the wrong height & should be replaced in pairs

^^Too true don't just do one.

I have a complete set of standard springs for sale, £50 for the set.

That's a touch mate get in there!

I've seen the result of someone driving with a snapped spring. 'What could go wrong' you might think - after all, it just means that the car is a little lower on that corner, right?

Right - until the sharp end of the broken spring becomes unseated because it is too short, and gouges it's way into the inner sidewall of the tyre, cutting a massive hole around it's entire curcumference!

It didn't seem right to tick 'like this' but yeah, there's the nub of it. You've made the right decision. A lot of people prepared to drive with fooked cars lately, something in the air?
