Steering rack ends, tdi

Featured Replies

How hard would it be for a novice to fit rack ends or would it be best to leave it to a garage to do?

Are you meaning just the track rod ends out by the wheel or the full track rod all the way back to the rack?. If just the track rod end, providing it is not seized to the track rod, then with a few basic sockets and spanners, and a balljoint splitter, you should be ok.

However if they are seized, then they at a minimum will probably require heat to remove them, or at worst may require the complete track rod back to the rack as mine did.

If you require the full trackrods, I would suggest letting an independent do this as the tooling can get quite expensive as the fixing nut is large, seem to remember they are either 32 or 36 mm, but can't be sure which.

Either way, you should budget for wheel alignment at the end

Hope it helps,

Phil.
