This is how it's dun, apparently 00 means on the right means no faults 01,02,03 etc that's how many faults you have...

It's the mk4 forums you need.

Here is a one link: http://uk-mkivs.net/topic/4360-recirc-air-flap-motor-v71-remove-and-replace-guide/

Many youtube videos but mostly on left hand drive Golfs and variants such as Jetta and Rabbits

Can be fixed but access is not easy. I remember too someone posted on this forum that they had manually set the flap to permanent non recirculation without much effort.

As Ive said

Manually move the flap and unplug the motor.  Job done. :) Bye bye mist

That's to test the whole system. I've just done that and got the 4FA fault. No others. So the next question is, is it just a simple case of manually opening the flap and leave it at that or fit a new motor? From what I've just read on the mk4 forum it looks a right pita!!

Glovebox and blower are a few screws.  Look up and youll see the flap.  Open it fully and youll see the pollen filter above.  Thats it done.

Spot on buddy i will try and get a look tomorrow. I don't use the recirc either so it's no big loss. Is it literally just push/pull by hand unplug the motor then job done?

Yep!  10 min job

I might do the same, will just have to suffer the tractors and stinky farms round here!

So can you remember where the motor and plug are in relation to the blower. I've never really delved in there.

You know, I may have even left it plugged in, it will be goosed anyway

Ok no problem. I'll take the glovebox and blower motor out tomorrow it'll probably be self explanatory when I'm in there.

Yeah, cant go wrong :)

Just goes to show though, yellowcar and myself didn't even know we had a fault til i read this.

I discovered mine a while ago when I heard the chirping, it seems to be working ok though so I tried resetting system with vcds but made no difference. Noise was better on face and feet but getting annoying again now, so I think I'll just unplug it. I also looked into how to and it's a freakin nightmare by all accounts. It's not just difficult to reach, you can't actually see what you're doing.

Yep, I took one look at it and decided not to bother.  I use charcoal pollen filters anyway

I havnt heard anything but the car has been misting up for ages so maybe i did hear something and forgot!!

Could have. I'm super sensitive to odd noises in the car, I drive round in a permanent state of paranoia haha. Usually they click as the gearing fails to engage I think, mine kind of whistles and warbles like something is fluttering in there. Did think it could be a leaf but that doesn't explain the fault code.

Its a mouse!!

So, when the blowers off and the flap is visible, I'm wondering if it would be safe to switch the ignition on, and cycle between recirc on/off on the control just to see if its opening and closing. It'll be safe to presume its faulty because of the fault code but you never know.

I'm changing the pollen filter and unplugging the motor for definite, I'm loosening my mind with the steaming up, twice iv had to take my massively pregnant female to the hospital early in the morning and I can't drive the God dam car for poor visibility let alone get the turbo going...

We've got one of those in the loft, or some similar animal. I don't know to be honest, could be worth a look. I'm sure mine still recircs as I've used it behind stinky diesels and for max cooling, smell was there, then gone. Think I will just unplug mine because of the noise.

Yes mate you don't need the hassle in those circumstances.

I was behind a golf gttdi yesterday morning and i could smell it in my car so mine may be fine too. But I'm kind of hoping the flaps are stuck shut now because the misting up is awful.
