Suspension upgrade to 2.0 tfsi VRS

Featured Replies

original shocks and springs ready for replacing so going to upgrade them.

Ideally want coilovers with adjustable dampening. And a modest drop in hight but no more than 30mm, retaining rake angle. I have a couple of questions.

Do I need 50 or 55mm dia. Whats the front axle weight (2005 tfsi)?

Are their any brands to avoid

Can I get some for £400 or less (offers, voucher codes club discount etc)

Ideally I would like bilsteins but they are expensive so considering AP, KW & SPAX etc.

55mm.

Look at options from Germany - I've just bought Bilstein B12's for £430 + postage

I did find a few prior to posting so I don't need lecturing but all had an overriding theme on stance (can I drop 50mm on 17's etc.)  where as my question is about adjustable comfort and cornering ability not what the car looks like. wading through drivel on things that are irrelevant to me is not my idea of fun so I thought I would ask questions pertinent to me, so sue me please forum police throw in a fine for my bad spelling and grammar while your at it.

Sorry you took my post as a lecture as it was not meant that way.  I did answer one of your questions and then pointed out that there was already plenty of info on the forum.  Many posts are concerned with ride quality rather than lowering or using non-standard wheel/tyre sizes.   Starting yet another thread on a subject that already has plenty of coverage just provides more for others to search through in the future yet adds little (if anything) to the knowledge base.  I hope you find the solution you require.

Sorry about my reply its just that I spent about 2 hours trying to find answers to my questions before I gave in and posted the topic. To be then told to search for it afterwards just rubbed me up the wrong way and I was grateful for confirmation of Ø55. Your also correct that my post has just added to the number of search results. However hopefully now mine will be the top result with a clear concise answer to the question to prevent people have to trawl through pages of irrelevance. I have also found from awesome gti;s website that the front axle weight required by some shock manufacturers is shown on the VIN label. So that clears that up.

The best ride/balance compromise is well known to be B12's. I don't beileve they are adjustable but I think will give you what you want otherwise. They are proper monotube dampers with quality matching springs.

I've had a cheaper height adjustable coilover kit on a MX5 I bought. All I can say is steer away from them as they are usually badly made (so will cost more in the long run) and harsher.

I bought from Lightning Tuning, hardly quality service (check online reviews) but pay with a Halifax Clarity card to get the best price and full consumer protection.

What about Koni STR.T? how do these compare with the B12's I know years ago Koni were as good if not better than Bilsteins performance wise.

Price wise they are half the cost of the B12. Surely they aren't half as good?

Could be a good option, Ive not heard of that kit - are they fairly new I wonder? I've had other Koni's and they do some good dampers, did not like FSD's at all though.

They certainly appear well priced, I suspect they aren't monotube at that price but as they are matched to decent quality springs it might well be what you are looking for.

Don't forget top mounts if your car has done a few miles, the SKF Euro Car Parts ones are good and cheap
