Tyres on your VRs - how long did they last?

Featured Replies

I know this will depend on how you drive, pressures, how many people in it, how many miles you do etc etc. However we are getting a 3 year lease on a new Octavia Vrs (no additional spec on the tyres) and the ease guy is asking about whether we want wear and tear insurance. Its about £6.50 a month. Just wanted people's thoughts please.

I got 18k out of the fronts on mine.  I have a 40 mile each way commute, mix of roads from motorway to fast country B-roads.  I think I did well.

New tyres went on back.

for the 35 x £6.50 and any other charge you do not give them you can fit a pair of new tyres if needed.

How many miles is expected to be covered over the 3 years of the lease?

Thanks for the reply - I have just seen the post below about premature wear on Vrs estate (don't know how I missed that!) which is what we will have on Thursday. The 'wear and tear' price is £6.56 per month for 3 years. Working out at £236 in total. Reading that post it seems a no brainer to get it.

we expect to do 24k - the dealer reckons a pair of new tyres is £280.

Make sure there's nothing in the small print goving them a get out clause like the tracking being out as Octys are known to have tracking problems even from new. If there is you'd need to get it checked and obtain a print out I guess.

Pricey. You can get premium rubber for much less than that. Mytyres are doing Vredestein Ultrac Vorti (my preference) for £94.50 each, fitted.

Black circles are £93.48. Bargain.

Thanks - interesting about tyre prices. I am now cross-posting in the other post about premature wear but in the other post 8 people who have posted are getting an average of only 13150k out of their tyres. Not good.

I will look at the small print re alignment. Thanks for that.

Move the Wheel / Tyres Front to rear at 12-18 months if they are still wearing OK,

and only fit a pair of new tyres before returning the car if necessary for you & others safety and having legal tread.

I paid £200 for 2 new front tyres at 15000 miles but they were right on the legal limit.  I'll not need any more before the PCP is up so I'd save about £36 by not having the plan.  With the agreement they would have been changed earlier but presumably with a tyre of their choice not mine...swings and roundabouts.

I guess that if you only need 2 tyres over the PCP it's more expensive to have the plan but if you need 4 or more, it's cheaper.

If accidental damage is being cited as a selling point of the plan, National tyres offer free cover for this with most tyres purchased online and then fitted in store.

I knocked my fronts out in 12k which I know is better than some, Goodyear F1s replaced them at just under £200 the pair fitted.

If you are planning to cover 24k you will definitely need one pair of tyres at least, and depending on luck and driving style you may need a second pair.  So choice seems to be gamble on a small saving and don't go for the cover, but you risk then being out of pocket by a fair bit.  Or pay up front and have the knowledge you have no more tyre costs.

BTW, who decides when the tyres need replacing if you take the cover?  If you are forced to wear them to the legal limit you'll have to suffer poor grip for a few k miles.  If you can change them once at about 3mm then it seems better.

My fronts lasted about 21/22k miles, un-even tyre wear though the inner edges were more worn than the outer, and the front right was worse than the front left.

about 60-70% of that is motorway miles.

Replaced with Eagle F1's and paid for a 4 wheel alignment so i'm hoping these last longer.

Tyres were about £200 fitted

It possibly worth it, as I know from our lease deal on the scout they expect a certain amount of tread and an equivalent tyre quality and spec when you hand it back as when it is new - hence assume wear and tear desk sorts this. I think with that mileage your risk of losing out is low but worth checking re the alignment etc
