Remembering Ayrton Senna

Featured Replies

Today marks 21 years since Senna was tragically killed during the San Marino Grand Prix, but his legacy remains as powerful as ever. Still to this day, no other driver has been killed during an F1 race, whilst the cars are now safer than they have ever been before. That’s not to say the sport is risk free but that was the thrill that excited Senna, and that’s why his name still lives on today 21 years after his death.

Thanks for posting.... might just be worth a watch of the Senna movie this weekend

Greatest ever.

The 94-96 seasons would have been awesome with the real competition that had turned up.

I was confused by the "no other driver..."comment since lots of them have perished in races.

you missed out "since".

And it's not just F1 drivers who die.

RIP

Jeff Krosnoff (1996)  Indy car

Dale Earnhardt (2001) NASCAR

both on live TV

and many others.

Totally agree and fully appreciate that other drivers have perished in motorsport but Senna was an F1 driver and as such I was stating that no other F1 drivers had died.

I thought it was clear what you meant and it's an incredible achievement given how fast and dangerous the sport is.  The film '1' isn't as well put together as Senna but it's still a reasonable watch particularly as it spends more time going into the safety aspect of F1 and the repercussions of Senna's crash and the actions taken to try and prevent any further fatal accidents.  From what I'd seen of Sid Watkins in those two films I decided to read his book which is definitely worth a read and makes you appreciate the amount of work done to improve the safety in F1, it's staggering how bad facilities were not that long ago and Watkins himself is an impressive character.  He was clearly a very smart guy but never comes across as arrogant or know it all, he just seemed to be a genuinely nice guy that all the drivers liked because all he cared about was ensuring their safety.

Thanks John, not read it so will seek it out. Is it Life at the Limit?

Sid and Ayrton were very good friends and Ayrton talked with Sid heavily on that fateful weekend.

Yep, that's the one - Senna and Watkins were obviously very close friends and it's quite upsetting watching Watkins talking about Senna as he seemed to partially blame himself as he'd tried and failed to convince Senna not to race and instead both go off fishing together.

It would have been nice for Sky to show it this weekend...but ...No
