5 vs. 6 speed transmission

Featured Replies

Hi.

I'm new to this forum and (Skoda cars actually) but here goes.

I bought a Fabia 3 Hatch 1.2 TSI 90 BHP for my girlfriend. She does half and half city and country road driving so we opted for this version. 5000 miles pr. year only.

Now I have a question, from my sister actually, because she is considering this car also. Having tested ours and being impressed.

She will be doing far more highway and country road driving -< so higher speeds, so I promised her to ask in here if anyone knows how much difference there will be in the 110 BHP car and the 90 BHP in regards to the transmission.

Performance wise there is no big difference but I'm thinking of cabin noise and RPM of the engine.

All test cars avaiable in Denmark seems to be the 5 speed 90 BHP version.

Does anyone know the gearing between the two versions. How many RPM less should she expect at eg. (50, 70 and 80 MPH ) <- legal speeds in Denmark at roads and highway.

Fuel economy is almost identical and not that important. But if the 6 speed version is far more quiet than 5 speed then this could be considered. Prices are 1000 pound different here.

Kind Regards

Afterthought: I could drive at the mentioned speeds here and list the approx. RPM, but so much for being scientific. :-)

A manual 6 speed 110 is running at around 1750 rpm at 80 km/h in 6th gear. 100 km/h should be around 2100 rpm (if I remember correctly).

Have the older 1.2TSI 86 in a Fabia and the 105 version in the Spaceback.

The 105 with the six speed is the more relaxed on a long run. Cannot remember the exact difference in RPM at UK national speeds but I think its around 300.

I have the Mk3 Estate 110bhp SEL. I think it's a great engine, however I haven't driven the 90bhp version so I can't really compare.

If given the option however of a 5 speed versus a 6 speed and I could afford the difference in cost, then the 6 speed would win every time.

Thank you all for the response.

I just tested for myself this afternoon. At the time of writing the original post the car was not available.

90 km/h is @ 2000rpm quite exact in 5th gear.

I had a go in. VW Polo with the same engine ( as far as I know) and it was doing 90 km/h in 6th gear @ 1850-1875 rpm. so this seems to be the difference.

Well she will have to decide. I will report this to her.

Thank you all again.
