Stone chipped the windscreen. Turned into a crack

Featured Replies

so I was driving to work yesterday morning for my windscreen to be pelted with what can only be described as an asteroid. I didn't notice any cracks until I drove it back home and now it's spread about a fifth way up the windscreen. (Stone hit under the drivers side wiper) ive had a few quotes for new windscreens fitted as I'm avoiding going through my insurance as I'll have to tell them I've made a claim next year. Prices starting at £130 up to £170. Is there any sensors or anything in the windscreen? I noticed a black line down the centre starting from the top. Does anyone know what this is?

Ahh that sucks. :-( If you have the cash it is worth while not involving the insurance companies.

Radio antenna I believe or something similar!

They're just a pain! I see so I'll need to make sure the new windscreen comes with it then!

Most insurance companies will cover the cost of replacement windscreens or windows (less an excess) and it will not affect your NCB.

The black line down the middle of the screen is the second 'diversity' anntenna. The connection is behind the interior mirror.

Check that the new screen has the correct tint before ordering.

Don't be too concerned if the new screen is not "original" as, for example, the Pilkington ones are the same quality and, in some cases, slightly superior.

When the screen is being installed, check if the A-pillar trim is being replaced. Some windscreen fitters have two new ones as part of the kit but otherwise they are very easy to remove and refit before the screen goes on.

It's only £130 and means I can retain saying I've not made a claim in the last five years. I will speak with the man before he does it about the a-pillar trim. Do you mean inside or outside trim?

How should I check the tint before fitting?

The shiny black vetical trim on the outside and the ends of the windscreen.

Check that the fitter orders the correct screen for your model as some screens are clear. I recall the vRS has a green tint.
