Brakes

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Quick Question,

My Fabia has had exceptionaly spongy brakes since I Have had the car, and I Have complained to this to the dealer several times and they responed by cleaning out the rear drums. That Didn't really have an effect so They looked at it again and Put it on an MOT Brake Tester and found it to be within the law. Now The Car Does Stop, and It Can Stop Till The wheels lock, but the pedal is so mashy and the brakes have absolutley no feel at all and there is alot of pedal travel. So With the dealer not willing to do anything (even though it's under warranty) Can The Brake System be retrofitted with rear disks from the Elegance or vRS? Or Can anything else be done to get that "Stop on a postage Stamp" Feel?

Thanks

Brake fluid changed?

As for swapping the whole braking system over, that's more of a tech question then I'd be happy to answer, but pretty sure the hubs are different

Well The Car would have gone through an so many point check before being sold and the dealer presumably would have checked this, but the Brake Fluid level sticker on the Battery cover has never been filled out!

There shouldnt be any reason why you cant get a great pedal with drum brakes on the rear.

Does the pedal pump up at all and feel better afterwards?

Does pulling the handbrake up improve the feeling of the pedal?

How much handbrake travel do you have?

No The Pedal is constantly mushy and seems to need be pressed harder to maintain a level of braking if you know what i mean, I Havent tested it with the handbrake, but it has a fair bit of travel (And The Button does not pop out by itself!)

Ill be honest the difference between the 2 disk and 4 disk system is HUGE imho. When I was running stock disks and ebc greenstuff on both motors I was always underbraking in the 2 disk car! Has to be said though fitting greenstuff was a big improvement over stock. The pedal travel is also much more in the 2 disk car.....

Yeah We Had a Courtesy car with all round disks and it was miles better, which is why I Asked about retrofitting them, I Am Willing to fork out a little for that extra confidence, it's so important to me especially as Im Learning to drive.

Lummox would be able to give you an answer on the conversion, personally though to start with maybe get the pads change for ebc greenstuff (ds2500 will eat the standard disks iirc) or better yet get a complete black diamond set up on the front.

Hope the lessons go will if you down Croydon way give us a bell and i will do your pass plus!

What is this greenstuff? is It like Paint that goes on them? and Where could I Find someone in the luton area willing to do it, or would a dealership do it?

Either way the pedal shouldnt feel like mush.

If the rear brakes are adjusted correctly you should have four to five clicks on the handbrake (although this isnt full proof as the cable can be adjusted up).

Okay, so If I But this stuff (Which Im Very Willing to do) Who Would fit them for me could the dealer do it?, All I Know about car mechanics could be written on a Knats Thigh!

Know what you mean Ross but there is definately more play on the 2 disk set up....

Agreed (oddly enough I have driven both ;)) But alot of it sometimes is down to poor adjustment or problems. What I dont want someone to do it spend a load of cash on parts when there maybe a simple underlying problem that can be rectified thats all.

Hmmm, I Could Chase the dealer up again, but I Dont want to push them too far!
