Fuel gauge needle stuck on empty after filling tank

Featured Replies

Hi all my fuel gauge needle was on red with warning light so as normal filled the tank (unleaded) but the needle hasn't moved from the red? Any thoughts? Help please?

Something's stuck, or you have a problem with the tank sender.

Try giving the instrument cluster glass a firm tap. Also try driving a rear corner up and down a kerb. Those should help with "something's stuck".

Thanks, will give it a go. The time had also changed. Potential computer problem?

Ok tried bashing it but no joy, any other advice?

Could be an electrical connection problem, or the sender unit float may be holed and won't float up any more when the tank is full. A common dodge with holed floats is to cut them open and press in a cork.

So if I take it to the garage and tell them to fix it when they go over it for the mot will that be ok so you think?

Yes, should be fine. Ignore the fuel gauge for now and just use the trip meter - reset every time you fill up and then refill every 400 or 500 miles. Most motorcycles don't have a fuel gauge at all and their owners manage perfectly well this way.

Ok so I booked it in with skoda to have a look at in couple of weeks HOWEVER the needle has now re adjusted itself and gone to where it should have gone. So what to do? Shall I cancel appointment with skoda or take it in still?
