Parking up today my octavia vrs gearbox decided it didn't want to play anymore and made a loud bang. Previous to this it has got stuck in reverse. The gears are now quite notchy and a little slack and on moving the car it's lurches and then has a banging noise I can only assume is from the gearbox. Am I looking at a new gearbox or is it something a little less expensive? ( ever the optimist). Anyone else had this problem and if so where do I begin looking to get it fixed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I wouldn't go that far yet...how is clutch pedal? is engaging low pedal?

have you checked the engine mounts?

Unfortunately I'm not that mechanically minded, I can do the servicing bit, brakes and oil but that's about it! Clutch seems to be fine, when driving off it tries to go then the noise happens. To,be fair it only started when I parked up tonight. The gears on the way home seemed to be notch so thought something didn't feel right

Just to add to that, when setting off the gearbox does a little kick in first gear. Doesn't jump out but has a noticeable shift

Could try resetting the linkages, doesn't cost anything. Try a Google search there's a you tube video floating around somewhere. What car is it?

Are you losing any oil under the car, as this can also be a sign that a diff rivet has broken up into the tranny. Try as the others have said above, but if the cure is not obvious, then seek  a garage's help fairly quickly, as if it is a rivet dropped, then the next stage may be a hole in the casing.

 

You may also want to check that the dog bone is still secured at the gearbox, as I have seen the bolt drop out of there before now.

 

Best thing is don't panic, but don't do millions of miles in it until you've checked it out properly.

Cheers for the advice, I did look at the linkages and my mrs said yesterday there was a bit of oil where I was parked. So could be any of the above. I don't plan on driving it until I'm back from holiday, and I have access to another car. Think I may take it to the local garage and get their opinion, but helps if I have an idea of what may be the issue. Cheers
