I have a 1999 Octavia 1.6LX (75bhp). The fan that runs the blowers for demisting/heater etc started to get noisey and now also cuts out and sometimes does not work for days before starting again. Spoke to my nearest dealer who says I need a new motor costing

replacing the fan is easy, remove the glove box and you can see the fan housing ,unscrew the two gold screws underneath the fan to take it out disconnect wires and pop in the new fan .

The easy answer is get a second hand one and fit it yourself, which shouldn't take you any more than an hour. One thing to watch out for is that when we first replaced one, the Skoda part was modified and the modification was to reverse the electrical connections. This took us a while to work out when the customer returned the car and said that the fan was not very powerful. It was sucking instead of blowing. Also that car had a problem with the wiring connector on the tunnel in the centre of the car that caused the fan to work intermittently.
