Change brake lights

Featured Replies

Hi,

Can anyone advise how to change the brake lights?

I've been intermittently getting the warning bulb failure light all week so will try changing the bulb on the left brake.

Any advice appreciated, I know i struggled changing the front head light as I couldn't get the bulb back in.

Is it easy enough to do on the brakes?

Thanks,

Atif

See here, I assume you have the Twindoor and not an estate?

This shows you how to remove the rear light assembly and access the bulb holders on the back of the cluster.

It's pretty easy...

1) Open the boot (in hatchback mode helps).

2) Pop off the two black plastic caps covering the Torx screws (be careful, the tabs are easily broken and they are stupidly expensive to replace).

3) Remove the Torx screws.

4) Pull the light cluster out towards you.

5) Peel back the foam sheath and disconnect the electrical connector.

6) Twist off the waterproof bulb holder.

7) Replace bulb.

Be warned, the brake / tail bulb on the MkII Superb is unusual, it is a 16W bulb not the usual 21W.

Thanks for that Silver, I'll look it over tonight.

But darn just read the last bit about the bulb, i bought a couple of Bosch 21/5 w as Halfords recommended.

100% about the 16w?  I do have the twindoor 2009 170 CR.

Thanks

Yes, silver1011 is 100% correct. As stated in the manual in the "fuses and bulbs" section, the bulb for the brake and tail lights are W16W.... Halfords staff are clueless on most things. Took me 35 mins to convince them there is a Ford colour called Vitro Green because "We've never heard of it mate... " and there is a specific set of Bosch wipers for a "A what.... a MKI Skoda Skip wassit.... hahahahah.. oh, right sorry mate, only 'avvin a larfwivya....."

Just went back to Halfords to return the 21s and guess what? They've never heard of 16w bulbs!

Any idea where can i pick these up? Checked eurocarparts online and couldn't see them.

Thanks

Thanks numskull, i only checked euro as the light was out so just wanted a quick pickup but now light is back on so I'll order. Lol

What will happen if you fit 21w bulb, I may have purchased a couple. By the way even for a non techy like me, dead easy to fit a new brake light bulb as indicated above

I suspect it will prompt the blown-bulb warning light on the dash.

A criticism of mine has always been the quite dim brake lights on the Twindoor, far less bright than the LED strip in the window and when compared to many other modern cars.

That they are only 16W explains it.

I assume that the 21W bulbs you have bought are capless? The fitment on the Superb is not the usual bayonet fitting.

They look like this...

Please fit the 21W bulbs and see if they work!

Hi Silver

Yes the 21w are capless and look like that, but I won't fit one until I have another bulb failure. Car is due for a service soon so I will ask the dealer as well.

Just joined the group - looking for changing a blown rear light on a ‘62 Superb - found excellent you tube showing how to access the bulbs then came across the bulb dilemma. Have a Halfords bulb set with no 16 w capless.  Went on your link and have 10 coming for £3.78!

Thank you

Great, pleased it helped....;)
