Choosing the right vrs coilovers?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, ive been scouting around the forum for a while looking at info on which coilovers to get for my vrs, and im still nowhere nearer on deciding which ones. I'm looking at around the £450 mark, and I thought I found a decent set with the ap coilovers, but after further reading I'm led to believe that they will only drop the vrs 25mm over the standard ride height, and then its riding on the bump stops. I've had coilovers before on my previous car (grande punto sporting), ive been through eibach sportline springs, which weren't low enough, FK AK streets, which were horrible, came out the box new with a knocking shock, and my last pair were weitec hicon GTs which would've been ideal after reading reviews on the vrs version of them, but they no longer do them. I'm not wanting to go crazy low, I'm wanting to get the tyres flush with the arches front and back, also if I can avoid messing about with drop links, top mounts and ARBs that would be preferred. So in all I'm looking for a set of coilovers which will lower the car enough to sit flush, straight out the box with little to no further modifications. As its only a weekend car im willing to put up with a pretty harsh ride, as long as its not riding on the bump stops and constantly knocking and banging.

At the moment im looking at v-maxx, but I cant seem to find many people on here that use them, has anyone else got these? and are they decent? If you can let me know what youre all using, any photos to go with it, and what are the likely problems to encounter when lowering over certain amounts, that info would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

Iv got ap. There not bad. Not a smooth ride tho. They drop lower than 25 over standard.

Still got a 3rd more left on the front and just under a 1/4 on the rear left. I wouldn't personally go any lower. Got a cupra r splitter now and iv rubbed it a few times.

I had V-Maxx coilovers. Not a good ride. Harsh, crashy, hard, and I didn't go all the way down. Dropped about 25mm I think. Swapped them for KW v3s after a few months.

For your budget I'd go for a Koni damper kit with h and r springs. 20mm drop and a nice ride. Or do you specifically want coilies? Is it adjustability you're after?

  1. Thanks for the replies, the ap's seem to be an option again then. Its not necessarily the adjustability im after as such, just from previous experience ive tried springs and realised they didn't sit how I wanted them, and theres nothing I could do about it but go for coils as they almost always drop lower than spings / shocks. I've heard good reviews about the spring/shock combos though, im just worried i'll be stuck with something im not entirely happy with and then end up going with coilovers. Thanks for the suggestion though :)

No problem, it is a fairly sizeable purchase so not one you really want to be regretting, what you say makes sense.

Are the KW's much smoother?

Still very firm, but a much better ride overall even at 40mm drop.

Ok thanks, I would like to keep the rear about standard, maybe 10 mm lower. Most needs to be done at front, because since the LCR topmounts the nose sits about 20 mm higher. So I will need another 30-40 mm drop to have it lowered 10-20 over an standard VRS...
