Cooling speed / petrol vs diesel?

Featured Replies

The climate control in my Octavia has never worked since I purchased it so I cannot answer this for myself.

Does it start cooling any quicker in a petrol engine motor than in a diesel engine motor?

Like a petrol engine warms a lot quicker than a diesel.

I ask as I am considering trying to sort it out, and get it working / repaired. Also something for me to take into account when I eventually get around to selling and (hopefully) upgrading. I suffer in a hot car.

Cheers guys.

No, car heaters are powered by waste heat from the engine. Petrol engines tend to produce more waste heat than diesels which is why the heaters in petrol cars warm up faster.

Aircon systems on the other hand are a belt driven heat pump. It doesn't matter whether the engine driving the belt is petrol, diesel, electric, etc, they will cool at the same rate if the pulley is turned at the same speed.

they will cool at the same rate if the pulley is turned at the same speed.

To clarify, are you saying that they will both start cooling the interior, within a similar period of time, from the engines being started (from cold)?

Not about how much (same rate) they cool.

cheers.

Cooling means reducing the temperature. The aircon will  start cooling when the power train is driving the belt. I do not believe there is any basic difference in the drive mechanism between petrol and diesel engines. The length of time before you notice cold air depends on how hot the compressor/evaporator/ducting/car interior is to start with.

yes, should start cooling near enough straight away

Really, I never knew that. :giggle: .

Cheers Brad. A clear simple answer to a simple question. .

No.

(There's your simple answer, I had thought you might be interested in why that was the case but....)

It was this bit that confused me slightly, Nick, but as I read your first reply again, I realise you answered it with your first word. I kind of misread it, that's all.

Appreciate your input and time :) .

Cheers bud.

OK, no worries.

No need to mock. There is a difference between the air-conditioning starting and the actual perceptible cooling commencing. If everything is actually 'cold' including the external ambient and the interior ambient temperature, then not much air conditioning is needed to reach your chosen temperature (assuming climatronic). Lots of variables to consider, fewer if a manual system. I did say that there was no obvious difference in the system for petrol or diesel.
