Should I cut my losses

Featured Replies

Had a gearbox issue which I believe to be bearings given what I've read on here and what a mechanic thinks. Driving back home there was a loud bang, gears stuck in first, a nice trail of oil and a huge whining noise!

My prediction is the case has been broken and the gearbox is goosed. I can get the box removed and sent off for the cost of £400 which is best case scenario condition wise. Would it also be wise to get the clutch changed? Bat a conservative guess it would be around £800 I think. Correct me if I'm wrong. The mechanic suggested not throwing too much money at it as it's an 05, re-mapped with 106k on it which in working order would be worth around the 1800 mark. So do I chance the repair or cut my losses and sell as is hoping to get maybe a grand?

Any advice would be most welcome

Is the car otherwise in good condition?

'Don't throw too much money at it as it's an 05 plate' is the same type of stupid thinking that says only get cars on lease as anything over 3 years old is knackered. An 05 is still pretty recent and imho most cars that are much newer than that are pretty crap anyway - far more to go wrong on them than a gearbox and quality takes a nose dive.

The 05 for a mk1 is last of the line - all the major stuff sorted and there's plenty of them rolling around with lots of life left.

If the car is otherwise good, and in fair condition, and you like it - spend the money. Better the devil you know. Have a look in the ads on here, plenty of cars being broken and the going rate for a known good 02J gearbox is sub £150 - also could get a bargain from a breakers as the same box is used on A3/Golf/Leon etc of similar vintage.

On the other hand, if you're unhappy with the car and want to use this as an excuse to get rid, then don't even consider getting it fixed, just move it on.

Look at it this way, if your car is worth £1,800 fixed it will probably only be a few hundred broken - and then you still need to buy another...

Cheers for the feedback. I really do like the car and have enquired about a few gearboxes on here. If I can pick one up cheap enough it would be worth taking a chance then getting mine reconditioned. It's in good condition besides so on reflection probably better to get it fixed.

Thanks again

Just get a 2nd   hand box  new smf and vr6 clutch mine is on 02 and just had to do the same to mine
