glow plug light

Featured Replies

Hi I've recently purchased a 170tdi cr engine vrs and this morning I noticed there is no glow plug light coming on to say it's warming up is this correct or should it come on ?

The glow light should come on with the ignition, however at this time of year due to the ambient temperatures it will go off very quickly.

It's not coming on at all I'm going to ring a local diesel specialist as I've only had it a week and it's never come on ..any common reasons why ?

Could be a bulb in dash pod, difficult to say until the weather gets cold and you find out if heater plugs are working or not.

If you can get the car scanned with vcds it may offer some pointers.

Yes, it should come on, whatever the weather, if only briefly for the standard 'idiot light' check at start-up.

When it comes on and stays on it could be trying to flag up a serious problem that might have been "solved" by a previous owner by disabling it. Get a diagnostics check done.

Ok it runs fine so hopefully no problem then...

There are no bulbs in the dashpod, they are non-replaceable LEDs.

Neither of my 1.9's have the glowplug light come on in this weather, and no fault code shows. The lights do, however, come on when the weather turns colder and the glow plugs are needed.

Sorry, Mike, but my glow plug light always comes on briefly, whatever the weather. Here's the relevant extract from the user manual:

Glow plug system  (diesel engine)

The indicator light lights up for a cold engine when switching on the

ignition (pre-heat position) 2 ⇒ page 139. Start the engine just as soon as

the indicator light goes out.

The glow plug indicator light will come on for about 1 second if the engine

is at a normal operating temperature or if the outside temperature is

above +5°C. This means that you can start the engine right away.

There is a fault in the glow plug system if the indicator light  does not

come on at all or lights up continuously. Contact a specialist garage as

soon as possible to obtain assistance.
