Sat nav Columbus – overestimates of travel times

Featured Replies

Sat nav Columbus in my Yeti (one year old) seems to grossly overestimate expected travel times.   Typically, on a journey lasting no more than two hours, by 50 min. and a journey lasting about three hours, by an extra hour.   The ETA is usually not corrected until the last half an hour or less of the journey; in either case, the journey is mostly motorway and dual carriageway driving.   Has anybody observed anything similar?

Is the speed set in the sat-nav for motorways and dual-carriageways actually the speed you drive at?

There are three settings for speed: slow, medium and fast.

What is yours set to?

I find that 'fast' is about right for me even though I don't drive fast.

And it will update more rapidly as you near your destination as there are fewer roads to travel on and the calculations become more accurate.

I agree often vastly over estimates of travel times - especially compared to TomTom.

It appears to be due to the slow speeds assigned to single carriageway sections of the journey and possibly to a lesser extent  dual carriageway sections.

If my journey is motorway and dual carriageway trunk roads the estimates are okay.

If I have significant sections of fast single carriageway travel the estimates are way out and the ETA drops steadily on these sections.

Cant remember seeing any speed settings available  and certainly none which allow average speeds to be set for different types of roads.

Press the 'Setup' physical button

Press the 'Navigation' soft button

Then 'Advanced Navigation'

Then 'Speed Calculation'.

Allows a generic speed interpretation for the whole journey. Not possible to allocate speeds to different types of road.

Try (from memory)

"Setup" > "Navigation" > "Advanced Navigation Settings" > and adjust the time calculation from Fast - Medium - Slow etc.

Yep, as above...

Thanks found it now - obviously didnt scroll down the advanced settings far enough.

Changed speed from Medium to Fast.

Changed speed from Medium to Fast.

It'll still over-estimate on longer journeys (especially if you exceed the speed limits), but at least it will be a bit better than before.

Many thanks for all your replies and helpful comments.   Re Briskodian's and Addict's comment, my speed setting is to 'fast' and always has been and in general, I drive within speed limits.   Apart from the slow/medium/fast setting option I am not aware of any other adjustment that can be made?

Member's experience seems similar to mine.  I shall keep an eye on the road mix vs overestimates in future.   In the two examples given, the shorter one is a journey from Leeds to Penrith, on A1/M1 and A66, 100 mls in total and with no more than 15 mls in total for access, so approx. 75% is motorway or dual carriageway driving.   The other one is a journey from Leeds to Hatfield, 180 mls in total, with no more than half an hour for access on local roads, so approx. 80% of motorway driving.

Our experience with Garmin is similar to that quoted for Tom Tom, always within five minutes of actual travel time and this is also true for journeys significantly longer and regardless of road type mix.     And this seems fairly typical, with the exception of my Columbus.
