Multimeter to test electric motor

Featured Replies

Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

In summary, my mother's dishwasher doesn't drain, I think this means the drain pump isn't working, I've had it apart and everything looks ok, I was just wondering if there is anyway to test the part before I buy a new one?

I have a multimeter which I bought cause I figured I might need it at some point.

So the question is basically, can I use the multimeter to test to motor and if so, how.

Cheers,

Kyle

You'll only be able to tell if it's getting mains voltage when it should be draining.

What model?

You could ask on here

with make and model for help.

Friendly bunch, but most offering advice are blokes in the trade.

If motor is an induction type, coils may test OK, with it getting mains, but motor may ot turn . I've had several in this condition =FUBAR.

If it is a Bosch and it has stopped mid cycle still full of water, with the water light showing, slide it out and give it a very violent shake that may well get it going. It worked for mine several months ago and it has been fine since. This tip was picked up on one of the forums, sorry can't remember which one.

You can test the motor by feeding it some leccy to see if it turns - clamp it down first!!

In the past when I had this happen on one of my machines, it wasnt the motor but the output from the controller chip that had failed. Is there a "Spin Only" option you can try on the machine?? in my case this worked, it was only as part of a full cycle that the pump wouldnt work.

I assume of course, that you have checked the impeller isnt jammed with a baby sock or similar.

Everything on the dishwasher works fine and when it get to what I assume is the drain cycle it makes a weird noise.

I've taken it all apart and there are no jams and the motor moves freely.

What power source could I use to test it?

Just to confirm its a dishwasher not a washine machine

Sorry, my mistake.

Is the weird nose coming from the impeller or the motor??

Any noise would suggest the motor is getting power, but cannot turn, so a blockage of some kind, OR that the impeller blade has come loose on the motor shaft.

I don't know, only happens when everything is plugged in and in operation,I don't know how the power the motor outside of the dishwasher without killing myself.

I've had the motor out and couldn't identify anything wrong. Therefore was hoping to test the operation of the motor outside of the dishwasher.

Do you know if the motor is rated at 12v or 220v?, some dishwashers step voltage down via a transformer.

It's 220v(I took a pic of the sticker)

Take an insurance out on the machine with Domestic & General, give it a couple of weeks then ring-in with the fault your having?

Really not worth it's a crappy brand. Was hoping I might be able to fix for a tenner with a new part but figured if I could confirm that was the problem first a tenner is better in me my pocket than someone else's.

D & G will see through that one in minutes, as they do a policy for those with broken down machines. I'd suggest you have missed my last post =#3 , and the forum I suggested asking for help. The blokes this are professional engineers, giving their time and advice freely. I've found that they do not insist on a level of competance/knowledge ( and will talk you through most things), but will advise on safety . Give them a try ,as they might suggest a simple cheap cure.
