Fabia VRs outer CV joint - does it come off?

Featured Replies

I'm just trying to replace the offside outer CV boot. My Haynes manual (which isn't much good for the VRs) says the joint slides off the shaft, but it looks like one piece to me. Please help! I want to get it back together tonight if possible.

CV boot or joint?

If it's just the boot, get a stretchy type, will be much easier for a DIY job.

If it's the joint, yeah they do come off but abit fiddly sometimes. Take the boot off anyway you can, tear, rip, cut or snip! Then clean all the grease off, look down the back of it where it meets the shaft and you will see a clip, open it up and pull. Easier said than done sometimes :D

If might help you to look at a brand new joint in your hands to see where the clip would sit and how they come apart.

This has been the case for every car I've ever done anyway. Good luck.

Thanks but I can't see anything resembling a clip. Having a new joint would help - if I had one! The new rubber is supposed to stretch over the joint but it's far too hard.

When removing the outer joint the circlip is deep inside.

Fit the driveshaft horizontally in a bench vice (with plates so that the vice doesnt mark the shaft, dont over tighten the vice either)

Remove the outer cv boot

With one hand hold the outer cv joint (by the splined shaft for the hub

With a deadblow/copper faced mallet, strike the rear face (i.e. the side in which the cv boot was fitted) of the outer housing of the cv joint. Make sure you hold it straight or the cv joint will just pivot.

It should then pop off of the shaft.

Replace the circlip when fitting the new outer joint and boot (as found in the £10 oem cv boot kit)

Thanks to all for the advice. I have done it.

Good job :)

happy days!

So its a spring clip type, not a circlip?

Yeah it's a spring type clip,

It's just a small piece of spring metal I suppose.

Google driveshaft clip and you'll see straight away.
