Remap

Featured Replies

Hey so I know this has probably been discussed in a lengthy thread, if so a link would be useful as I'm rubbish with the search function lol. I'm looking into remapping my 2.0 TDI Octavia but have a few questions.

1) My car is new on finance, I know a remap voids the warranty but could I revert the remap if I ever needed to?

2) Insurance quotes with a remap add hundreds on to my premium, I know you should declare mods, but do you? And again is it something that can be reverted if needed?

Is remapping the car really worth? Does it have a noticeably different feel to it?

Thanks in advance!

I haven't had a remap, but this is what I remember from reading:

1) I believe most mapping companies will put it back to a standard map free of charge.

2) You should declare it, yes. I would if I had a remap. Regarding a big premium increase, have you tried the specialist insurers like Chris Knott and Adrian Flux that are also sponsors of the forum. These guys are modification friendly.

Is it worth it? Not 100% myself yet. I like the idea much, more power, often better mpg. I just can't justify the expense (yet). I believe a good map will still feel as progressive as standard.

1/ Yes but they are still traceable if Škoda really wanted to look that deep.

2/ Thats the gamble only you can answer... can you afford for your car not to be repaired by the insurance company if you have an accident, as if they find out about the remap (likely if they look for it) then you will not be covered, it’s all well and good thinking you can just remove the remap / tuning box etc before the insurance company get to see the car... BUT what if you or the car is are not in the position for that to happen? Is it really worth the risk??

Yes remapping is worth it, go to a respectable tuner (Shark etc) and the car will not only drive much nicer it will be quicker and return better mpg (obviously not both together though!)

Thanks a lot to you both, still have about 6 months left with my current insurer so I think I'll re consider it then :)

Hi,

Please feel free to give us a try for insurance when your policy is due for renewal. If you wanted to PM me some contact details nearer the time I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.

Regards,

Dan

They seem to get pretty good reviews on the whole.

There is a long thread about them here:

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/294284-weve-started-having-tinker-with-the-20tdi-184ps/?hl=%20tinker

The thread is mainly based on the 184 bhp version of the same engine, but you'll get the idea, they are very similar. I seem to remember a thread specifically for the 150 bhp engine, but can't find it currently.

The tuning boxes seem to be liked by people who want to avoid warranty issues by in my view cheating the system and removing the box for services.

I am not sure they are as good as a 'proper' remap, but they get pretty close.

I'm sure a search for 'tuning box' or similar in the Octavia 3 or Performance sections may help  :)

I have the petrol version of the DTUK box, and for a generic map within a plug and play remap is pretty impressive.

You have the option to move how the power comes in by using one of six different codes (standard plus or minus 3), and you have to play around to find the one that suits you, I don't think it's quite as good as a map that's been written to suit the car but overall it's still a good bit of kit.

If you do decide to go down the DT box route don't forget to mention Briskoda as you get a discount.
