Rotten arms!

Featured Replies

Had the usual clonk from the suspension...

Went to replace the bushes (yeah one was in 180degeees out...) to uprated to cupra (as recommended on here - top tip - push em right the way in - had to put a spacer on the tool to get em right in the console!)

Anyways - bloody arm had rotted through!! Only noticed after putting it back in!

What an arse of a job to get it back out! Ended up using parents tow bar and ratchet straps!

Long story short - if your changing the bushes be prepared for knackered ball joints too!

I'd replace the arms if I were you..new bushes on old arms might not last for too long though.

done and done

By arms do you mean the ball joints had failed or the actual wishbone had rotted through! If so that's pretty bad like!

They come with lots of holes in anyway, got a picture of the failed part.

Wishbone had rotted through - can't upload pics from my phone as they're too big :(

Oh and the ball joints had failed

Sounds like it could be wise to just buy new wishbones when doing this job then! Suppose they aren't that expensive and you know everything is new so will likely last the ownership of the car.

Need to get round to doing mine at some point but I keep putting it off lol. Not in desperate need but could do with doing. Think I'm gonna go for the PSB ones myself and now new wishbones lol.

Cheers, how you finding the CUPRA bushes? I'm undecided whether to go for these or the PSB ones. I like the idea of the PSB ones because they are similar to the powerflex ones and a bit easier to fit, usually just pop in with a mallet rather than having to make some sort of press up.

You can feel the car handle alot better, turns in alot nicer! I'd imagine the psb ones would be alot easier to fit - but a tool is only £30 on fleabay! Bought psb ones for the front but arms had bushes in already... So will fit em when they wear out :)

All the clunk's have gone there is a tiny bit more Road noise/vibration below 1400rpm but I'd imagine that's because the bush is actually working instead of the arms just flapping about! Probably get same sensation with new bushes anyway!

Next job is to get my tracking done before I wear my tyres out!

Yeah, I've kept mine standard for the better part of 18 months. My previous cars lasted about a month before I started to mess with them and change things lol.

Thinking I want to put a bit of money into improving the handling now on the vRS. Just had 4 new Rainsport 3's on so going to do the bushes and maybe treat it to some eibach springs and a rarb at some point. Hopefully handle a bit more like it then. That's the one let down of the car for me the handling as standard isn't the best.

Humm, I can see a hole there sure enough, the rear beam on wife's old Polo, lost its paint every few years, even scrubbing it clean and using Hammerite smooth black paint, the next but one year I could peel it off, I'd reckon that it would be only a matter of time before MOT man would comment on it.

I think that this just means that some where in the greater component supply market, there is no regard for what protection the black paint should be offering, really just the same issue as folk had with metal sumps, years ago. Actually, even on my 2011 Audi S4 prefabricated "axle" locating parts etc, where there has been a weld, there is corrosion from a very early age.

While on this corrosion subject, I think that it is time for Waxoyl and Dinitrol to start pushing their products again, wife's brand new Polo certainly has nothing other than impact absorbing paint to protect its underbody. Old 2000 Passat had a heavy wax covering from factory, 2002 Polo had a very thin wax covering from factory and with time, that disappeared, especially at the spare wheel area!
