Suspension knocking (top mount?)

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Today a loud knocking developed on the passenger side front suspension. Going over even the slightest bumps you can hear it knocking.

When I push down on the wing you can hear it knocking almost like somethings loose and it does apparently to come from the top of the suspension turret. I've taken the the ap off the top of the turret and when bouncing the suspension I can feel play in the top of the mount (is this normal) also when pushing down on he top mount and bounce the car it seems to stop it....might be a coincidence though.

I've jacked the car and had a look at drop links, ball joint, ARB, wishbone bushes and it all seems fine.

Cheers guys

Stephen

Grab the anti-roll bar and pull it from side to side. My drop-links looked fine but upon doing this it replicated the noise and you could actually feel the knock through the bar! If that checks out then the other suspect is usually the console bushes, again they can look fine but have enough play in them to cause a knock. Get a big bar and wedge it between the frame and the wishbone and put quite a bit of pressure on to see how the bush behaves under loading.

It could be the top mounts but I'd defiantly try to rule anything else out before you go through the hassle of doing the top mounts because they require removal of the strut to replace so will cost more labour.
