Alternator fire ( almost )

Featured Replies

Hi guys, as you know ive been having problems with the vrs taking longer to start, limp mode etc. well at the start of the week my alternator starting screeching.

I was planning to look at it this weekend but on the way to work this morning i heard it was grinding.

I continued on untin i saw my battery light come on & smelled smoke.

Pulled onto the hard shoulder & found the alternator pulley had come off & the belt was burning!

Removed belt & drove home.

What alternator do i need? Looking for a second hand one from scrappy due to needing it for monday.

Could this be the cause of my other issues? Cheers, Andy

You should just be able to replace the pulley.

Yes as said above, you could possibly just change the alternator clutch pulley if this is what has seized, however you will need to buy a special tool to remove it. Clutch pulley is about £25 and the tools needed ar about the same.

You'll need a 90amp one. On my other fabia the alternator is making a crunching noise so I've got a second replacement from eBay for £45

Most of the time it's a nightmare changing the pulley.

I normally always change the full alternator unless they are above £100, then the pulley will be changed.

As above, mine wouldn't budge with a breaker bar so took the alternator off which is quick and easy. Took it to work where we have access to air tools. Came off after few triggers :) they are tight!

Yeah, I've snapped the tools before they've been that tight.

Thanks guys, ill just buy another alternator. Does it have to be off a vrs or will any fabia 90amp with correct pulley do?

Any fabia alternator will do. Also goes for any seat vw audi alternator that's come of the 1.9tdi engine.

IIRC the petrol engines don't have the one way clutch in the pulley.

Cheers mate, will look for a tdi one then.

I've just fitted my spare alternator tonight. I have the old one which I'm pretty sure all you need is a new pulley fitted. If your interested pm and wil have a chat. (Off a 2005 vRS)
