Engine Bay lighting.

Featured Replies

Already done a search but didn't bring up exactly what I was looking for, plus Maplin's has gone now hasn't it?

Basically getting a few bits hydro dipped and want to show it off but without the use of Neons has anyone got any other ways?  Also another way to keep the bonnet open but without the use of the hook?

You can get bonnet lifters which will hold bonnet up

Look for 12v led strips

plus Maplin's has gone now hasn't it?

Has it? Website still working

yeah I've found the 'gas' bonnet lifter think that is the best way.

I used the one in Bath a few months ago, Bradford a month ago and Stockport last week.

Was in my Maplin Saturday, to get some Blu rays, still going strong

I think you're right about the re-location....my local store is open.

Went to my bank branch a few weeks ago, it was all shut up and the only sign it was ever a Halifax branch was the branding on the letter box, no notice they had moved or anything.

Rang a colleague up who looked online and it turned out there was another branch just round the corner. Whoever decided not to put "We have moved" signs needed a good kicking :p Maybe they had the same dopey idea of moving but not saying anything :)

Yeah just had another look on google and looks like they've moved from city centre to wyvern just 10mins up the road :D.

So what are peoples suggestions apart form tacky neons.

I know I'll need a few but im really nervous when it comes to stuff like this lol what if they catch fire/short a fuse

Just put an in line fuse to the power supply to them if you are that worried, but I have used items like these (not these exact ones) without issue in my car in several locations.

they draw such small currents that it really is not an issue if you wire them correctly.

Where under the bonnet were you thinking of mounting them?.

What wiring circuit do you feed from?

You could go from the battery fuse box for a live and use the bonnet lock switch to switch the earth connection.

Edit - ignore that just seen yours is a fabia 2, I think the bonnet lock switch is canbus on them,

You could use the same live point, but use the main vehicle earth on the body, and mount a discreet switch to the bonnet hinge -

something like this - http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/non-mercury-contacts-tilt-switch-module-n17ct

well to give you an idea i'm, having the air box and engine cover hydra dipped then a strut brace so want to be showing that off so to speak.

Can you see your bonnet inner skin or does it have a soundproofing panel there?. Would you be looking towards white or coloured lighting?.

If it was my car, I would decide on what colour lighting I want and where, then I would make up a small loom from appropriate cable after temporarily fitting the light units roughly in place with masking tape so that I could fully size the loom up that I would need to make.

I would than encase it in shrinkwrap and fit your connectors, line fuse and switch to the car and test it all before finally being happy. Once I was happy, I would peel the tape from the LED strips and final fit them.

PS sorry Chris, but I assumed if I answered your question straight off, it may confuse OP with possible CANBUS issues with wiring it that way on his car, so I answered your question, but his way if you get my drift

Thanks for the reply.  it has the soundproofing underneath would it make much difference if I took this off?  I'd be looking at white lighting (not the cider :D).

Loooks like a job for my matey over in Lichfield with wiring looms etc, but will say to him what you've told me

Do await possibly more questions :D

No problem
