DMF Problem?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have some strange noises/issues With my 1Z 140 BMM DSG.

When warm, the car sometimes starts and stalls immediately with a high clunking/dunking noise and severe vibrations. I may try several times before the engine starts. When engine is cold, this never happens.

Recently, at RPM's between 1k and 2k I can hear some sort of grinding noise when hitting the gas pedal. This also happens only when the engine is warm.

I suspect the DMF, but I am open for other suggestions.

Thanks!

Had it been a manual I'd say DMF for sure.

With it being a DSG I'd suggest this could also be to blame, especially given the symptoms.

My advice would be to get it looked at sooner rather than later, especially given you are getting metallic grinding noises - never good.

Hopefully there will be some fault codes stored to help you to pinpoint the problem...

I guess I forgot to mention, but the grinding noise are present when the car is not moving also, with the car in N or P. That's why I thinking DMF.

That definitely sounds like a DMF to me.

How many miles has the car done?

There's just one DMF that fits the DSG and it's slightly more expensive than a normal manual one.

The DMF can be inspected to an extent without removing the gearbox. With the starter motor removed it can be checked for signs of play.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I have removed the starter. Is there any tricks for how to check for play etc?

The car has done 275000 km btw.

Thanks..

I did as shown in the video, and I could move it at least 5cm back and forth. Stupid me put it all together, and forgot to check for play the other way, but I guest the DMF is shot!?

Funny thing is that the DMF was replaced only 20000 km's ago, so I guess this is a warranty case :)

I have an appointment with the workshop that did the jobb tomorrow.

I will give an update later this week.

Thanks!

5cm sounds a little too much. Was it quite firm to move or loose and rattling?

Sounds like a faulty part that was fitted then and hopefully sorted under warranty.

Update:

The workshop has identified that this clearly is a faulty DMF.

The manager at the shop, that stood beside the car while a mechanic tested, said to me in a in a humorous tone "It felt like the DMF came after me" :P

And of course they will fix the car for free :)

Fantastic result!

Good that they've identified it straight away and have not hesitated to fix it for free too.

If only all garages were so honest.

I believe new bolts are a must also, buddy, otherwise it will not last very long.

Maybe the cause of this premature failure?

Update:

I have now got the car back, and it seems ok. No more grinding noises :-)

The manager at the shop told me that the previous mechanic had installed a DMF for dry clutch, but my gearbox is a wet clutch gearbox, I don't know if that's true, but they fixed the car for free, and also changed one of the inner drive axle boots for just the cost of the boot, so I am happy :-)

Not sure if they are interchangeable but I guess you have to trust what they say. The "dry" (7 speed DSG) is for lower torque engine so I wonder if they did fit the DMF from this box and the higher torque of the 2.0 has destroyed it.
