Unlocking your phone and imei code

Featured Replies

I am out of contract now and own my phone

An iPhone 4

I intend to sell it,unlocked as it's obviously worth more

Talkmobile say they will unlock it and are sending me an unlock code, I just had to give them my imei number, which I've done

They say the unlock code will take 'between 5 and 10 working days' to send

I am almost at 10 days now and have heard nothing

When the 10 days is up what should I say when I ring them, and what can I legally threaten them with to prompt some action?

Just speak to the operator and state that the phone hasn't been unlocked. They should send a text to say the phone is now unlocked. I can take longer due to them requesting it to be unlocked from Apple.

There is no Unlock Code for an iPhone.

The networks request an unlock from Apple, then for it to take effect you need to insert a SIM from a different network and connect your phone to a PC running iTunes - it will contact the Apple Mothership, receive confirmation of the unlock and work.

So why did the guy in India tell me he's sending it to my email,he even read my email address back to me? Fobbing me off maybe?

And what are you supposed to do if you haven't got iTunes?

I had it on me laptop (for me iPod) had nothing but trouble with it

O2 send us email confirmation that it's been done, but it doesn't contain a code.

If you don't have iTunes then you need to download it, or if you are selling the phone, leave it for the buyer to do.

Yes, as stated any iPhone regardless of version is unlocked through iTunes by Apple, no codes emailed at all. I did an old iPhone 4 which was on T-Mobile, took about a week for Apple to apply the unlock, then hook up to iTunes and bingo.

The only way is iTunes, and directly connected by USB to the computer with iTunes.

My wifes iPhone 4S is unlocked, and we never went through any of the hoops mentioned above; just stuck a GiffGaff SIM in it and ran a small program downloaded from an Australian version of the Apple Store.

Please dont ask for the program name, it was two years ago!!!!

Should still use iTunes so it communicates to Apples Server to request the IMIE number to be unlocked. Usually with any phone bought from a phone company as soon as you put your chip in it, it will lock to that network unless bought directly from Apple.

Another unsubstantiated GG story with no evidence. How many iPhones have you bought, sold and unlocked in the last few years?

Official factory unlocking of iPhones uses iTunes.

I had loads and loads of trouble when I left O2 getting this done. It turns out when I had a replacement iPhone due to a fault. That they never updated the imei number which they had on file for my account as stuff done in store does not get updated onto your details

Thanks for all replies

Phone is now unlocked

Went through iTunes, and eventually unplugged the phone and put it back in

Despite no indication on screen it now seems to work with any sim I put in

All this and no email from talkmobile to confirm (as promised)

Still I managed something technical so it's all good. :)
