1.2 HTP 70 CHAIN RATTLE AT COLD START

Featured Replies

HELP PLEASE

We have fitted new Febi latest modified cam chain kit and still have same rattle at cold start

Also changed oil with correct spec, just in case someone hadn't previously and fitted new genuine oil filter

Any ideas please how to cure problem ?

Mine does this, too. Has done pretty much from new and it's 73K miles old now. I haven't worried about it too much. Perhaps I should...

It's going in for a pre-MoT once-over and actual MoT on Tuesday. I'll ask about it then.

vv0Ify, are you sure it's the cam-chain? You may be hearing the hydraulic tappets rattle at start up. This can sound a bit like a cam-chain issue. The hydraulic tappets (maybe only one or two of them) may be draining some oil overnight and during start-up they re-charge but rattle a little during the process. It's not uncommon. In fact, the longer the car stands the more they should rattle. My 1.6 16v tiptronic engine does the same at start-up if I leave her for a few days or sometimes even overnight. It's nothing to worry about if it is that, unless the rattling goes on for more than a few seconds. Mine stops within a second or so. You can cure it by replacing the hydraulic tappets as a set. It's easy to do. It's not possible to detect which one's may be going bad so a set is needed.

That's a thought, and thanks for the info. In my case, I had a whole new cylinder head fitted a couple of months ago and that made no difference to the rattle at all.

They probably put the old hydraulic tappets back.

I doubt it, but I will ask tomorrow to be sure. We're in for the MoT.

Nope it is not the tappets, defo the cam chain and ideas ?

If its noise only for a few seconds, its most likely ok. if its for a few mins or does not go quiet until the lump is fully warmed up, Then I'd worry.

There are a couple of O-rings on the lower end of the oil filter assy (items 16, 17 here) that may be worth changing, on the off-chance that this helps.  I'm not really sure exactly what they seal, but possibly one or both helps keep filtered oil from sneaking back into the sump under gravity after switch off?  I'm sure I read somewhere on here that someone had improved something by changing these. Sorry to be so vague.

yes I had heard about changing these seals and have tried that but still no better, any other ideas ?

Anyone got any thoughts on this matter that may lead to a cure ?

How much do you want to spend to get rid of the noise?

If the car goes well and you have had the work done are you not as well to just drive it and put up with the noise if it is only 'on cold starts'

or get shot of it and get something less noisy.

Anyone with more helpful suggestions to fix the noise ?

So it looks as though the cam chain on mine has finally jumped a tooth - to be confirmed.
Damnit.

Damnit.

Nope. Just a stretched chain.

Are the tensioners on these the same as earlier htp's, no ratchet, just a spring (and the oil pressure once it arrives)?

No idea. Sorry. If I remember, I'll ask when I return to pick the car up again.

yes spring and then oil pressure

Do you leave the car in gear when it's parked on a slope? I'm sure I've read or been told that that's not a good idea on these. Something to do with the engine possibly turning the wrong way a bit, and pushing oil out of the tensioner? Not sure how much truth there is in it?

Wow! Actually, no, I don't. I almost never have cause to park on a slope.
