Tandem Pump Failing?

Serviced my Octavia today, everything was OK until I was getting rid of the old oil.  I realised I had more than I had put back in, not massively more, but definitely more.

 

At some point in the past some halfwit appears to have tried to top the oil up with a garden sprinkler, it went everywhere and the foam under the engine cover has a lot of oil in it.  Consequently there is quite a bit of oil all over the place.  But I have noticed that there is more oil on the left hand side of the engine (viewed from inside the car).  With a bit more rooting around there appears to be a lot of oil around the tandem pump, both the cover seal and the seal between the pump and the engine block.

 

Consequently I beginning to think that the tandem pump is the cause of both the oil leak and increased oil level.  I have cleaned up the tandem pump as best I can and I will keep and eye on it to see if more oil appears.

 

The oil removed from the engine does not seem to smell of diesel and looks OK.

 

I have a 4x4, so it has an 8v BMM engine with a DPF.  I have done some searching and injector seals are mentioned (but mainly on the 170 PD engines) as a possible cause of increasing oil level but I am leaning towards the tandem pump as the problem.  Any thoughts?

I'm planning on having a look at the fuel filter for signs of oil.

I had same on my car when I bought it - see report from lab. There was 7.5% of diesel in oil.

 

It should be injector washers but my friend mechanic said it is *******s because they are made from bronze or copper to withstand high pressure. Or injectors might be damaged and fuel lines leaking fuel, which is returning back via oil ways from camshaft lubrication. I also had major oil leak because some idiot removed engine head cover and didn't tighten bolts or annual inspection carried by German service was yet another example of stamp business (they don't do anything on car, stamt the log book and happily charge you) common among authorised services.

 

I also heard a theory about DPF regeneration - but common sense tells me that is *******s as well. No idea how diesel could get into oil. DPF regen is just similar to anti-lag system. Retarded SOI (Start of Injection) to increase temperature in exhaust.

 

Last cause is tandem pump.

 

In my case, all stabilised after the oil change. Maybe it has something to do with DPF because my DPF has got no time to get dirty :-D

What model Octavia do you have?

 

I had a look at the fuel filter yesterday and there was no obvious sign of oil. It is due a change in 10k miles and didn't look any dirtier than I would have expected.

 

Having done a bit more rooting around the engine bay I am thinking my oil leak is from the back of the rocker cover.  I'm going to get a new gasket and take it off and have a look.  There is not much oil leaking, the undertay is not really oily, the only obvious fresh oil is on the back of the block and the dogbone mount.  Problem is that there is some much stuff at the back of the engine bay it's hard to see anything.

 

Since I cleaned off the tandem pump it has stayed clean, but I could only easily clean the front of it.  When I take the rocker cover off I will remove the airbox too so that I can see more.

 

The oil level is still OK on the dipstick at the moment and I am keeping a close eye on it.

 

I have heard of DPF problems on other makes where extra fuel is injected for the DPF regen and if the regen is interrupted then it effectively floods the cylinder and makes its way down the bores into the sump.

There is spec of my car.

 

Head cover gasket is common cause I guess. Mine was leaking so badly that I thought turbo lubrication is damaged/loose (return pipe from turbo)

 

I went to garage, cleaned engine (after I've tighten head cover with proper torque moments).

 

Major leak is gone. Still head gasket (under head) is gone as well - I still have small leak by the left rear corner (from front side view). Nothing critical, It will be replaced with cam belt or if leak increases.

Same engine as mine. Is yours 4x4? AFAIK the BMM engine with Dpf was only fitted to the 4x4 and Scout in the UK and these were only available as estates not hatchback.

No 4x4 - VAG doesn't make any real 4x4 anymore ;-)

 

If you want real 4x4, you have to go for Subaru Impreza or MItsu Lancer. Everything else is Haldex + EDL, even legendary Audi Quattro (some models still have original mechanical LSD Quattro) 

 

I noticed there is difference between central Europe markets and UK. Especially, in accessories. For example in Czech Republic where most Skodas are made - there is no electric windows, no heated seats. So much for supporting own people as in every developed country ROFL (Czechs are idiots and I still feel bad I was born there many years ago).

 

I guess it has got something to do with EURO emission standards - everything is free in UK. You can do anything you like with your car in UK, Austria 30% of modifications, CZ no modifications at all but corruption is your friend.

 

Engine block is same for BKD/BMM and I suspect even for 1.9 - only difference is head, which is massive on 2.0l

 

BMM head most likely uses more temperature resistant materials due DPF. I can see on my oil temp gauge temperatures up to 750deg C and after remap up to 850deg C. I guess DPF regen might reach as high as 1000deg C temporarily. Unfortunately, I didn't find DPF regen maps so far.

aye aye captain - standard FWD with ESP and EDL.

Once, turbo and injectors would be upgraded, I'll install Quafe LSD.

Not the exact same engine but principally the same.

 

On my Seat Cordoba PD130 I had a leaking tandem pump. It was leaking diesel everywhere. It was leaking from the cover. I also checked it wasn't under the recall as a big number of PD engines were recalled for the bolts coming loose. It wasn't covered... even though it was the same problem as the recall but Seat deemed my engine not to be included in the recall.

 

You can only buy the gasket that seals between the pump and the engine but not for the cover.

 

They are fairly pricey to buy new so I bought the new gasket, removed the pump and cover and cleaned it all up. I then reinstalled the cover using the original gasket along with some fuel proof gasket sealer. Refitted the pump and no more leak. Cost me about £15 with the gasket I think.

yep, usual failure is sealing on camshaft between pump and engine. You can do it yourself !!!

I'm currently thinking that it may be leaking internally and diesel is getting into the oil.  it would seem logical that at all stages the fuel side will be at a higher pressure than the oil, therefore fuel -> oil leakage is most likely to occur.

yep, it usually leaks internally around camshaft. if your oil level is steadily rising - it is most likely pump.

I wouldn't touch it until  you're sure there's fuel in the oil -- normal route is fuel pump into vac pump which discharges into the "rocker box" then to the sump

Well just to update this thread, the oil level was definitely rising so I bit the bullet and picked up a new tandem pump and fitted it at the weekend.

 

A bit fiddly to get off, the fuel lines really didn't want to come off, took quite a lot of persuasion.  I repurposed an old foot pump and some tubing as a vacuum pump to empty the old pump and refill the new one.  Made a bit of a mess with diesel but cleaned it all up and kept it off anything critical.

 

Started straight back up no problem, not even any extra cranking.

 

I think there was definitely an issue with the old pump as the performance of the car is better.  I had noticed a slight hesitation when applying light throttle at low revs and the car did not like to idle in second - it would judder like it was about to stall.  Anyway this behaviour has disappeared now.

 

I still need to change the oil and I will probably do that at the weekend and see how we go.
