Turbo removal/replacement

Whats the easiest way to remove the turbo?

Is it possible to remove it with the manifold attached from underneath, with drive shaft removed? Or remove turbo from manifold, remove manifold and pull turbo out the top.

I removed from manifold then out from below. I had driveshafts and subframe attached. Had to remove actuator from turbo to get it past drive shaft.

Was it hard re-fitting the turbo to manifold, or oil and coolant feeds

I done all mine from the top took about a day to complete as well

Only thing for me was the water feed pipe I had to take out a few bolts that held the pipe to the block as I couldn't get it sitting flat on top of the turbo

Hardest thing for me was holding the turbo in place and lining up the bolts on my own. Would have been easy with help.

Thanks for the replies. Any tricks to line up the turbo to manifold or keeping the gasket in place

See I placed the turbo back on to the exhaust very loosely so the downpipe would take the weight and then I could manoeuvre the turbo about quite easy put the manifold on first then slid the gasket between the turbo and manifold with one bolt holding the gasket then using a flat blade screwdriver moved the gasket until it lined up with the other holes and placed the bolts through but only hand started the bolts

Ive been trying since 9 this morning, bolts just dont want to line up! Will the turbo and manifold still attached together fit from underneath with drive shaft removed? It should save time trying to bolt turbo to manifold from above

I fed mine in through the top but yes it should clear no problem from underneath

When I did mine I pulled it out the top and it went back in the same, did the lower bracket up loose to support it then got the oil and water lines lined up n bolted in by undoing the brackets on them from the cylinder head, make sure you use new cooper washers and there are 2 sizes as I found out the hard way! Spent a hour getting the oil feed on cos the washer was to small and I forced it! Shouldnt be hard to line up if everything is loose. 1 tip dont bolt the turbo to the manifold or tighten the lower mount until you have the passenger side manifold bolts in, much easier that way.

Not sure if it would help but I reckon if the dog bone mounts undone and the engine rotates bringing the head forward ud get more space, I didnt try that tho

Thanks for all the replies and help.

Finally managed to get the turbo back on, but now i have another problem. My oil light comes on over 2k revs!!

Ive cleaned the sump and changed the oil pick up pipe ( wasnt blocked and sump was clean)

Oil sensor is fine, and the engine sounds fine.

I think i may need to change the oil pump, has anyone changed the oil pump before? Is it an easy job?
