Radio fault - or battery?

Featured Replies

Three year-old Bolero (just out of warranty, of course), working one day, not working the next.  A slight glimmer of background light is the best it can do with the on/off knob or with reverse selected (which should bring up the sensor display but doesn't).  I've tried a long 'reset' press, and with/without an audio card loaded (never used a CD), and some other more 'unorthdox' resetting techniques.  I can't find a similar overnight 'death' reported here, but it must be a possibility.

On the other tack, my simple battery-state gubbins shows a gloomy red 'low' light, despite none of the usual low-battery symptoms (bongs, warning lights, slow cranking and so on), and the car had done journeys of 270-30-70 daylight miles during the previous week or so, as well as a couple of short runs.  Nevertheless, I'm contemplating a call to the AA battery service; they're offering a 760A job at £125, home fitted, inc VAT and disposal (member rate).  Rather more than some quality online goods but it's a 5-year guarantee - and I can leave them to sort any problems.

As long as the Monster starts OK I can live without a radio for a day or four but beyond that I'd be getting twitchy!  Thanks for any helpful comments or suggestions...

Take the negative off the battery for ...say.....30 mins....just a thought.

Have you tried removing the radio permanent live fuse under the bonnet for 30 seconds to reset it (fuse no8 if I remember rightly).

Action delayed, but problem sorted.  Up till now, either it's been raining or there was something 'more important' on m'Lady's List-of-Things-to-be Done, but this afternoon the sun is shining and - hey! it's Saturday!

Thanks for the suggestion from Oz, but the thought of removing all power to everything brought visions of the dash lit up like the Blackpool illuminations.  And I really don't look for complications nowadays...

Kevin's simple Fuse No.8 under the bonnet (checked in the OM) looked sufficiently specific for me to risk, and it worked.  Despite having to wait a minute (to be on the safe side) with the fuse removed, the longest part of the job was getting the fusebox lid back in place!  Grateful thanks, Kevin, and I'll buy you a beer next time we meet in Bob's Corner

The battery state still reads 'low', though, and that'll need to be sorted sooner rather than later.

 Good to know it worked for you, the fuse trick worked on my last one when that played up.

See you in the corner for that beer soon

Taking the neg off first and putting it back on last won't give you a problem if the keys not in the ignition.

It's how you change a battery in any case.
