My daughter has just bought a 2002 Fabia 1.4mpi 8v. This seems something of a mystery engine so I'm after a bit of basic info about it. Is it a Skoda or VW based engine ? Is it OHV or OHC ? Does it have hydraulic tappets and if not, why are they so quiet ?

Hello Arthur.My wife had one.Can't tell you much but you will find the info on here.Pretty sure it is an old VW since replaced in the range by the 1.2 htp.

Certainly had no problems in the three years she had it.

The 1.4 MPI 8v is a Skoda OHV engine, but heavily fettled to meet emissions regs. The 1.4 16v is a VW unit. It'd assume the tappets are hydraulic - the last car I had with manual tappets was a 1985 VW Jetta... (and the 1986 model year got self-adjusting tappets).

The 1.2s replaced the MPI and were designed by Skoda specifically for the Fabia, then adopted by the rest of the VW group.
