Tyre time

Featured Replies

Ok, first off I have 0% knowledge when it comes to things like this.

But It new tyre time for me old Furby. Still on the original 16" alloys, after much careful thought and consideration I'm going for the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's.

But the bit I'm a little iffy on is sizes. I'd assume I want them in 205/45 r16, right? Though some people have said go for 215/45 r16. Which as far as I can tell is a slightly wider tyre. But why is this better/worse and what would you suggest is the right one to go for?

They're a quite expensive tyre and I'd hate to buy a set of 4 and then find I've got the wong size or anything.

And on a unrelated note, do new tyres take a while to 'bed in'? Strangely enough driving for 2 years with 2 cars makes this the first set of tyres I've needed to buy. I find myself severely lacking in knowledge of the main thing that stops my car from crashing.

Thanks,

I would put on the size of tyres that are already on the car. Having a slightly wider tyre will also mean the profile is slightly smaller (45% of width) which may affect speedo accuracy. You also might have insurance issues if you run the "wrong" tyre size....

Tyres do need bedding in, or scrubbing, which takes around 500 miles of normal driving. Just take it easy and leave plenty of stopping distance and you should be fine :D

Cheers!

i'd go with the standard 205's, the would be a very small gain in terms of grip and a very small decrease in fuel economy with 215's.

the eagles are a good choice, i've not found better for road use.

@Chris - I'm actually starting to wonder if my initial 'brakes dont feel like they're working' feeling I had when I just got the car was also related to that :o

Completely forgot about that but you're quite right of course  (mutters something about new tyres, 312 mm brake upgrade, hehehe)
