Squeak now it's damp..

Featured Replies

Hello!

Your gonna have to excuse my ignorance at this one - I'll do my best to explain!

Recently had a cambelt change! All is fine.. since its got damp however - I noticed a Squeak from the auxiliary belt (I think it's the auxiliary!)

It seems to be on the top pulley attached to the alternator (if you look at the engine - it's the first grey box unit attached to the front of the engine at the top)..

I've also noticed that my lights seem to dim in reverse.. it was noticeable from when I had the car.. but lately seems to dim a fair bit..

Squeak goes once it's warmed up but does come back..

It's on the original battery as well.

Question relates to why it's squeaking? What's it likely to be? Is the lights dimming in reverse linked to it?

Car doesn't have a problem starting..

Cheers for your help and patience!

It could well be the alternator pulley, it has a clutch built in which allows the alternator to freewheel. Does it squeak if hold the revs up and tgen let it drop back to idle?

Didn't they fit a new aux belt when doing cam belt?

Might aswell imo seeing as it needs removing anyway.

Belts do squeak when they get old/go hard.

As above though could be alternator pulley.

Can't say I've noticed. Will have to drive her tmrw and report back.

I noticed it Saturday after the deluge the night before. Popped to fuel her up and after fuelling up - it didn't make a noise.

Then noticed it after driving home from work today - I got out the car and left it running and noticed it then!

Yep - auxiliary belt changed as well.

Has been fine for 2-3 weeks. Only now it's wet everyday is it making a noise!

Not related to the squeaking but depending on miles and use of the car the battery might also need changing. Mine (an 07 vRS SE as well) went earlier this year.

Right. So! Sat stationary and revving - no increase in squeak. Just stays slightly squeaky.. when moving it increases.

Once it's warm tho it's all fine!

Is it a case of a new alternator? And will that require a new aux belt?

I will smash a new battery on at the same time if so! Cheers Wilsonian :-)

You can replace the pulley, but you need a special tool to get it off. Also I'm not sure if you do it with the alternator in the car.

If it is the pulley then it tends to kill the tensioner when it goes, so I would replace it at the same time.
