From Fabia to Mondeo (new pics)

Featured Replies

I have recently sold my mk2 vRS as the need for more space finally realised itself. We had been struggling along with the fabia until we realised it was pointless being cramped in a small car. That's where the mondeo comes in.

The fabia was a great car and certainly up there with one of the best I have owned but with our other car being a 107, it was in for the chop.

We had a outline of what we wanted and what it must have. These included

  • big boot
  • petrol engine (only do 3 - 4k of town driving a year)
  • parking sensors
  • climate control
  • ISO FIX points
  • Black
  • got to last us 5+ years
We looked at array of cars including insignias, freelanders, qashqai's etc but none really ticked all the boxes. Until we found the Mondeo at our local garage. Was very lucky to find a petrol version with relatively low miles, FSH, and all of the above as the 2.0 petrol is not the most common engine. I have had a 08 plate mondeo before a few years previous and was a joy to drive even if the electrics were a bit iffy. For some people it isnt the most striking of cars but has all the stuff we need and more and has the most important things.

It is a 2010 Mondeo Zetec in black with the 2.0 petrol FFV engine. It has 145bhp but feels a bit more. Even though it is a heavy car it certainly shifts. It came with the optional 18" wheels, Climate control with rear air vents, Parking sensors front and rear, autochanger, cruise control.

All I can say is we wont struggle for space and so nice to drive. It only has the 5 speed box but even at 70mph it is nice and quiet and suspension is soft but in the corners is really nicely balanced. I have added mudflaps front and rear as I think it really finishes the car off. It has been averaging 39mpg over the 250miles we have already done but I am sure that will go down with the more town driving we do.

Anyway here are some pics. (will get better soon)

Looks very nice, are they Titanium trim alloys?

Can see me changing in a few years as the Fabia boot just isn't enough and the other half has a Fiesta 3 door so even worse.

Octavias are doing it for me atm but still really pricey. Nice Mondeo never thought about them but yours looks like a really tidy car.

Thanks for comments.

They are the titanium trim alloys and were an option when new. I don't like small alloys on big cars and think 18" fit perfectly

We looked at the Octavia but the rear legroom wasn't as big as the mondeo. Boot was cavernous mind.

There is a website (a ford one) where you can type the vin number in and it shows your the soec your car was specced from the factory. Quite good for seeing if any options you hadn't noticed are on the car and also anything that was added after the factory (wheel changes etc)

I shall have a look for that site. Found the phone and I can Bluetooth my music too :)

Did a 150mile run and averaged 44mpg. Quite impressed

Ford Etis is the factory built spec checker

I had an S-Max, it was a fantastic car in every way. I'd go back to Ford over Skoda any day (at the minute).

This will be the 5th ford and they are great cars. After my issue with the fabia and SUK I won't be going back to vag especially skoda. Shame as it was a great car.

Ordered my new boot badge and wheel caps today as with all fords it has started to 'spider' under the plastic

Just looked on the ford spec checker and it certainly had a lot ticked but so much available on these cars.

It came with the wheels as standard but also has voice activation command and sports suspension.

Recent Update!

After doing over 500 miles in the last 2 weeks with various trips to see family and the car has driven faultlessly. Has return a nice 43mpg over the tank of fuel and is such a pleasure to drive. We had 3 adults and a child in the car with a full car of luggage etc and didn't struggle at all.

Makes such a difference to the Fabia but I do miss the DSG gearbox and flaps.

A nice swap :)

Think the Mondeo tends to be pretty under-rated. The suspension and ride setup always seems to be other worldly; compliant and comfortable, yet handles well in the corners

Compared to my old passat I had as a company car, they don't compare. Build quality may be better in vw but to drive the Ford outshines in every way. I actual really like the looks now especially in black.

Had to replace the power steering pump on the car yesterday. Such an easy job to do as there is much room under the bonnet. Common fault on these cars but drives much better now.

A lot better than the Fabia VRS mate. The Mondeo looks really nice.

Had a titanium tdci one of these. Brilliant car and the stereo is very good in them too!

cant really compare the 2 cars. the skoda was a great hot hatch with a cracking gearbox and engine but the mondeo is a fantastic motorway car and the space inside is vast.

its about the same on fuel as the Skoda. It still amazes me how much my driving style changed when i had the DSG box to a manual.

I used to have one of these as a company car.

I do agree that it was a good car in terms of motorway driving. I also like the rear spoiler and the alloys!

The inside was where it really lacked for me, it's like ford simply ran out of money/gave up.

i agree to a certain degree but we also looked at an insignia and that was far too busy for my liking (like my old astra). I find the mondeo relatively simple in comparison.

the wheels and spoiler really finish the car off.

Slight update.

Not done a great deal to the car except new brakes and a remap.

Brakes up front are 300 mm discs (my 280hp corsa vxr were only 308mm) and we're rather worn. New pads as well. Stops on a sixpence now.

Had the car remapped as well. For this engine, the FFV engine, there isn't a great deal to be got out of it. It's 145bhp standard and with a new panel filter and some ecu tweaking managed to extract an extra 17hp. Total now 162bhp. Not too bad but feels a lot more eager now. Bearing in mind this hasn't got a turbo and is 162bhp n/a I don't think it's too bad. The next step may be cosworth cams which should be a direct fit from the fiesta st tuning catalogue. But we will see.

Next on the agenda, more sound proofing and new seats.
