Changing front speakers in Fabia.

Featured Replies

Hi, this is my first post here, so please don't bite!

I've got a Fabia (sadly no a vRS like most other people on here seem to have!), and am upgrading the sound system, given the facotry one is terrible.

Have changed the head unit, and fitted some 6x9's on the back shelf. Now I want to change the ones in the front doors. I bought some JBL GTO's and the plastic adapter to fit them in the original locations. Got the old ones out, and put the plastic adapters in, then found the speakers simply didn't fit, there just isn't enough space behind!

I measured it to 48mm depth, which is obviously a problem.

Now I've had a look round for something to put in there instead (so I now have some JBL GTO speakers for sale if anyone is interested!), and have found the JBL-GTO606Ce componant set. The low/mid speaker aparantly needs 53mm behind it, so my question is this; is there much space infront of the speaker before you hit the door card? I don't want there to be any changes the the card it's self, so it would have to fit. Also, does anyone know what the mounting depth for the tweeter is, and what the depth of the JBL tweeters are since it doesn't seem to say anywhere!

Thanks for any help anyone can give,

Pete.

I got a set of "Ground Zero" (German Brand) 6.5" Components that fit perfectly with the Autoleads adapter rings and the tweeters fit like a glove in the standard locations (behind the grill near the side mirrors).

They were about 70 quid iirc and sound great imho.

Thanks, I'll bare that in mind, but I am quite keen to stick to the JBL GTO speakers, I like the sound of them.

You should be able to make some thin spacer rings out of MDF to bring the speakes forward a bit.

There should be some clearance before they start to touch the inside of the door card

Too bad you don't have Earthquake over there.

Hi Pete I want to change mine where did you get your adaptors from my local place say the fabia isnt listed

cheers Chris

In my experience you will have very little room to play with unless you cut through the door panel (not pretty). I had this issue with Alpine S-Types in previous Fabia. They sounded great but looked really bad with holes in the panel. On my VRs I went with Infinity Reference Series. They just fit and give an excellent sound .... though not as good as the Alpines.

Sorry I can't be of further help.

Good Luck.

ISTR that the Infinitys are close to 60mm insertion depth, so the JBL's should easily fit.

The speaker adapter from a VW Golf is the one that was used on mine, I don't know what model though. I'll see if I've got the part number on my invoice from when I had my speakers fitted.

chappy1974, got the adapters from caraudiodirect.com, although I ended up going to the shop in Oxford.

I tried pushing the door card in over where the speaker would be, and it had quite a bit of give, and I didn't hit the speaker adapter, so I'm guessing there will be at least 1 cm which would be enough for the low speaker. Does anyone know what the space is like for the tweeter, and has anyone sucessfully fitted the JBL GTO tweeter there?

Thanks,

Pete.
