Knocking at front when accelerating

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Been on here a few times to learn how to do the rear washer hose, chamber under the windscreen, rear door sealing etc and many thanks to those who have posted such help and advice.

Now however it might be a bigger problem, whilst on the M62 yesterday a knocking developed at the front of the car. Gradually getting worse over a short few minutes, travelling about 30-40mph after congestion. Backing off the accelerator the knocking stopped, accelerate again and there was the knocking. When I pulled over and checked for exhaust mount problems or anything else that jumped out to me, nothing was to be found. After a few mins and deciding to limp it to the next junction, upon starting the car and pulling away, no knocking was to be heard.

Has anyone any ideas what the problem could've been? To my untrained ears I would say a metal but fairly dull kind of noise but not much if hardly any vibration from it.

Kind regards,

Rich.

It could be a worn engine or gearbox mount. Does it sound like it's coming from a certain place at the front end.

Another common area for knocks is the arb and the rear wishbone bush which are commonly called console bushes. I

Is it random knocking a a rhythmic knock in line with you accelerating?

Thanks for the replies.

The knocking was louder when moving faster/accelerating more and did seem to be rhythmic I'd say.

The area at a guess was maybe near the timing belt. Which was first thing to go through my mind as it is due in little over a thousand miles.

Can you hear it with the steering wheel locked left or right and pulling away? If so, it might be a cv joint.

No, it hadn't been there whilst crawling on the motorway. Then when I started to speed up it began knocking, gradually worse. Backed off to see if throttle related, stopped. Accelerated again, it was there again and got worse more I did accelerate. Pulled onto hard shoulder, turned engine off. No signs of anything, started engine and proceeded to next junction. No sign of any knocking again.
