How to change H7 dip beam bulbs?

Featured Replies

I am sure this will be very obvious once it has been explained to me, but I am really struggling to get the H7s out of my 2014 Scout to change the bulbs. The workshop manual (page 69 of the Electrical System manual) says:

- Release and remove the bulb -2- from the catches by pendular movement and pulling force -arrows-.

Firstly, should I assume that by "pendular" they really mean "rotational"? Pendular doesn't make any sense to me - it would mean moving backwards and forwards in a pendulum-like movement, which would be rather weird. But it doesn't seem to be possible to rotate because the rectangular lug on the bulb stops it from rotating which is obviously what it is meant to do so that the bulb orientation is correct. Also rotating the bulb does not seem to help anyway as it will not have any effect of freeing the bulb up because its base is not designed in that way.

Secondly, what is meant by "pulling force - arrows-". Once again I totally can't make out what they mean by this. What do you pull? You can't pull anything in the direction of the arrows - at best you could push!

Help!

Thanks - that looks more likely than the illustration in the workshop manual which seems to be describing a totally different way of doing it. I will try it later and see how I get on. I thought that the workshop manual would be definitive and authoritative, but it may just be that the user manual is more accurate!

The only thing that still puzzles me is that I can't see how it would be possible to move the bulb downwards in its holder as there is no space below it. But I will take a look and see.

Any other comments from anyone who has already changed a bulb would be very helpful and welcome.

OK, now I have successfully changed the bulbs. It is basically as it says in the user manual - I don't know what the workshop manual is going on about. You simply pull the bulb downwards and sort of hinge it out. Using the connector is probably best for this as it is fiddly and difficult to get hold of the bulb mount itself inside the fitment (the nearside one is particularly difficult because there is only limited clearance to get your hand in). The bulb just sort of comes away - it doesn't feel like a very positive action at all.

Then you take the connector off the bulb, put the new one on (taking great care not to touch the glass capsule, of course), and push the bulb back into place. The three clips around the side of the holder just push out of the way with very little force and hold the bulb in place once it is in the correct position.

I suppose it is just as well it doesn't take much force because you can't exert much force given the limited access you have.

Hope this helps anyone else doing this for the first time...

I was having the same problem on my 2015 Elegance. The instructions in the manual for removing the dipped beam aren't that clear and I couldn't work out how to remove the bulb. So many thanks to nickcoll, after reading your post it was relatively straight forward.  I found a small mirror helps to see what your doing and in particular to make sure that the tab at the top of the replacement bulb is correctly lined up with the bulb holder.
