Thermostat

Featured Replies

Hi all,

After years of owning diesels (fabia vrs and then mk2 octy vrs ) and wanting another petrol I've just changed to a 56 plate tfsi octavia vrs to get it out of my system and am loving the car.

I've done a search on thermostat issues and think mine may be going but thought I'd check before I pay to get it replaced.

When I drove home from work last night (15 miles town driving and some dual carriageway ) I pulled onto drive after half an hour and temp was at about 70 on the gauge.

Today when I started driving the car temp went up to 90 on temp gauge but then dropped as low as 70 on the gauge when taking it steady 5 minutes later on the motorway.

It then went back up to 90 after I exited the motorway ( 20 mins in to my journey ) and stayed at 90 absolutely fine for the rest of journey ( another 15 mins ).

Should I get thermostat changed ASAP, or keep an eye on it?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Temp gauge on my 1.9PD stays rock solid at 90 once it's warmed up so I suspect that yours may be OK.

Thanks Dave,

What's concerning me is the fact it was well below 90 after half an hours driving last night and that it went down before settling at 90 today.

Not sure if it's due to cold weather ( it's not that cold yet! ) or if I should be worried.

I'd be more worried if it was going above 90 that's for sure!

Just drove home from work again and in the 15 miles or so it's warmed up to 90, before dropping to as low as 60. Jumping up and down between 60 and 90 a couple of times quite quickly.

Got home, sat on drive for a few minutes and it went back and sat at 90.

Having searched the site could it be the coolant temprature sensor ( easier fix I believe ) or thermostat?

Heater work fine for info. And is it safe to drive in the meantime until I can get it in to garage?

Thanks,

Kirk

Low temperature is damaging the engine in long term, but nothing will happen if you drive it few miles till you get to garage.  ;)

(Assuming it's the thermostat, not the temp sensor that is faulty)

Thanks!

Ran just fine this morning at correct temp which is frustrating . Will change the cts and coolant and see if that solves it I think before the actual thermostat.

Though I'm afraid it's the thermostat, cause had the same symptoms on Opel (Vauxhall) Astra, changed the thermostat and everything was working normal again.

Good luck

Sorry to drag this up again but a bit more advice if I can..

The car is still under warranty from the independent I bought it from and although I'm told the thermostat isn't covered by this particular warranty he has said if I let his garage do it then he'll cover half of cost.

Problem is unfortunately his garage seem to have no idea where the thermostat is or what part they need to change which worries me slightly! Is it really that difficult a job?

I'd obviously appreciate half the cost being covered, but want to be happy it's being done right!

Can anyone tell me the part number I'm looking for please? It's a 56 plate tfsi vrs.

Thanks in advance,

Kirk

For info I did go straight in after I posted but they ordered the wrong part and then said I'd have to wait til after Xmas.

Hi Kirk. As you look into the engine the thermostat is below the intake manifold on the left hand side (tucked well away). You have to remove the alternator for access. Obviously drain the cooling system. Release and remove a few pipes. A special bit is required I believe it was called a triple square bit (although I can't remember what size). When I changed mine, I bought the part from gsf car parts. Job took about 3 1/2 hours. Good luck. Oh there is a good YouTube video that I followed. I'll have a look for it.
