1.9 Pd with Manual Transmission or the DSG ?

Featured Replies

Hi guys ,I am from india(asia) and i am interested in buying the New Octavia (which is getting launched here next week) .

However , in India the octavia II ll be launched only with one engine and that is the 1.9 PD with 104 bhp (NOT the 2.0 PD) with the DSG gearbox and the Manual .

Guys , i am preety confused whether to go in for the DSG or manual as both seems to be preety good . But if i go for the DSG then its going to be my first Automatic gearbox car(i 've always been a fan of manual) but now when i hear the reports of the DSG i feel like giving it a try ....

Please help me guys and let me know your views :

Which one is better and more reliable and FE ? TBH ,i havent heard that good about the reliability of DSG gearbox and what do you say guys 'll the DSG be fun to drive with the 1.9 PD(104 bhp) ?

Thanx in advance .

I couldn't stretch to a DSG but it sounds great and there won't be the potential issue with overloading it if you tune your car which is the case with the 2.0.

I'm not sure I could bring myself to pay the extra anyway but the manual on the 1.9 is 5 speed unlike the 6 speed in the 2.0 so in my book the DSG is the way to go.

I've got the 1.9 tdi and DSG combination and am extremely happy with it. Most of the time I just leave the box in auto mode and let it get on with it, which it does very well.

Bear in mind that the advantage of the DSG is that it really is a manual box in disguise, not like a traditional auto box, and so when you do drive it in auto mode it really does work like a 6 speed manual -- with the added benefit that you use it like a sequential box, without the clutch pedal.

Best of both worlds really, and if you can afford it, I really do recommend it. In real world conditions, I don't think that there is much of a difference in fuel consumption, even if on paper the DGS box uses a bit more than the manual.

Totally agree with that - this is my first Auto box and I have hated every other I have driven, but this is a great combination of engine and gearbox - I have no regrets of buying the DSG.

You hardly notice the gear changes, it always find the right gear and it response well when pushed.

The only time I have really used the seqential mode was last week in the snow(don't suppose thats a problem in India!) - helped me keep in as high a gear as possible and use a bit of engine braking.

I am delighted with the fuel consumption. My previous, manual, 110 bhp octavia mk1 returned 53.5 and so far the new car is doing 51.7. It may be a little bit thirstier around town and on rural back roads but it gains on longer journeys ( longer 6th gear must help here) - and thats on a car that has only done 2600ml so it may still improve slightly.

DSG every time. No contest really.....

DSG-Definately Should Get

Thanx a ton guys , i 'll surely go and test drive the DSG asap but TBH , i haven't read good reviews about the reliability of DSG ,i mean i ve read about people facing problems with DSG !

In "India" the DSG is Rs. 1 Lac (1250 pounds ,approx) expensive than the manual transmission , is it worth shelling out those extra 1250 pounds ?

But above all i 've some doubts about the RELIABILITY of DSG !

What do you say guys ?

Thanx .

Mine is to new to comment on but I have never heard of any reliability problems on this or any other forum. I do know that IF there is a problem then the whole gearbox goes back to Skoda for repair.

UK price is

There are no reliability issues with the DSG that I know of but considering the complex nature of the DSG box, there's bound to be the odd problem.

I wanted the 2.0 TDi but couldn't afford to get the DSG. The additional capital cost and company car tax associated with the DSG was beyond my budget. Non company car drivers face increased car tax and potentially higher insurance premiums too.

car tax is up one band -

I was refering to an increase in insurance between the standard octyII and that with DSG. The insurance on the OctyII is lower than the Octy I anyway because the new car probably has better crash protection and it has a Cat1 Alarm/Immobiliser.

Insurance companies are slow to react when things like the DSG come along but I was already being asked when i rang around for quotes back in september if I had a DSG box not. insurance increased by up to £75 and that's just the 4 or 5 brokers I got quotes from.

hi i remember reading DSG gear box fitted car is quicker t0 0-60 MPH,than manual gear box, how ever you should go for a test drive before u buy.iam waiting for a drive too.

The manual and DSG 0-60 speeds are identical however getting a fast 0-60 speed from the manual relies on the driver getting the gear changes right. The DSG Golf GTI/GT TDI is quicker to 60 than the manual by something like 0.1 seconds.

Also remember that the DSG can handle less torque than the manual so if you plan to tune a car with DSG, you need t be careful.

Don't get me wrong though, i'd jump at the chance of hanging to DSG now.

can we take it to around 300 NM?

Custom code can remap this 105 BHP PD engine to 145 bhp and around 320 NM. Is it safe cause I plan to do it??

Any help

Should be fine. You can get DSG in the 2.0TDi with 140bhp and 320Nm so no probs there.

I wouldn't think about going any further than that thought. Eg my 2.0 Tdi can be easily re-mapped to give 185bhp and about 400Nm of torque which i'd really consider but I wouldn't even consider it with a DSG for fear of blowing up the gearbox.

OK so 320 NM is fine but are we sure that the DSG on the 2.0L and the 1.9 are the same. Hope so??

Peter

I'm quite sure they are the same. They both weight 40kg anyway

wow

Gr8 so that means we can anyway take it upto 320 NM . That should be around 150 BHP. Should be real good I guess. Cant wait to get my hands on the car.

Thx for the info guys.
