Steaming up / recirculate button

Featured Replies

Since the temperature has dropped my car has started steaming up, especially when it is raining. It as if the recirculation is switched on.

If I press the recirculation button nothing appears to happen. I've never used it yet; is the button supposed to depress and light up orange like the AC button? It does neither at the moment.

The recirculation button on my car actually helps to speed up the de-misting of windows. Passing the same air repeatedly through the air-con allows the de-humidifier section to dry the air and hence reduce the condensation. The recirculation button in my 2012 car has 3 settings - off, On and On A - the last two settings light up the button.

However, the car's manual recommends turning off recirculation for rapid de-misting!

Just a quick question - what setting is your fan on? Front windscreen mode? you can't have recirc on.

As for your misting up - does it happen even if you're not in the car?

I had a leak and after fixing that it's SO much better in terms of moisture :)

Is your flap stuck one way or the other? Could be the dreaded recirc flap motor.

Ah ha, didnt realise that about the fan position, it was on the windscreen. Just switched it to feet and now the recirc switch lights up. I can hear the fan speed change a bit but I cannot hear a motor move, should I be able to?

No misting up when no-one is in the car.

Good question; how will I know?

Try a self test on the climatronic unit as a first step. See here: https://m.youtube.co...h?v=SrtUI28DfP8

Normal is 444 00

F4A (as in the video) is a failed recirculation flap gear/motor.

During the self test if you hear any clicking then that is sign of a failed flap or its gears.

As said above, you can remove moisture in the air causing misting up of windows by making sure the air con is set to AUTO. Set the temperature as normal and the unit will remove the moisture by cooling the air before it reheats it to the set temperature. This is one of the main advantages of the Climatronic system over the simpler "air con or heater" choice in units from the past.

Any fault code displayed is in hexadecimal. Convert it to decimal and then look up that number as a fault code on the Ross-Tech website.

Ah, mine does not have the climatronic, just the AC and recirc on and off buttons

Ah in which case I would assume you need to have a dig about. The flap should be under your pollen filter but unfortunately you can't really tell from above. I'm not 100% on your car set up but I assume it's essentially the same as a mk1 petrol in that you can take out the glove box (tx25 screws) and the fan and look up and you'll see it. You can then run it and use the switch and see if it moves in operation. Vcds scan would also show any faults with the system as you can't self diagnose. The reset is more effective with vcds too. There was a fairly recent (5 months ago?) thread on this in reference to climatronic, but there were also some pics of the area behind the glove box.

I've had the glovebox out a couple of times and it is just as you describe iirc. I'll have a look when I get chance.

There are quite a few videos showing how to replace the flap motor on non Climatronic LHD Golfs.

Take a look at these and see if they give you the information you need once the glove box is out.

I couldn't find the video I was looking for which shows a RHD Golf. From memory it is much easier to get to the flap on RHD and in fact it can be pushed to the other position if you don't want to replace it
