I wanna go wireless

Featured Replies

How do I do it?

If someone could point out say what I'd need from PC World, I can hunt the same products cheaper elsewhere. I'm just thinking so that I can see what I'm after. It's all too confusing.

When I get the equipment, I'm guessing its the same as wired? Plug a wire into router, install software and then input username and password and away it goes? Then add the other PC's after? Once the router is beaming away on the internet, how would I search for it on the other PC's? Via its name? Or would it give me an address to search for?

I've never played with wireless and it would cure a few problems in this house. Also, how far away can you log on from? 100yards? 100 metres? Just thinking about maybe getting wireless for the laptop and seeing first who's network I can piggyback for a while thats all.

Thanks all.

Should add, I need enough equipment for 2 PC's and a laptop. And I have nothing wireless at the moment, it is however, all working on a wired network.

Wireless ADSL hub/router - Linksys et al do them. Plug it into your 'phone line.

Wireless card for your PC - install driver first, then the card / usb wireless card. It will detect your wireless hub, follow the instructions that come with the router to configure it (wep keys etc) connect it to your isp.

Job done, simple.

Yes, out of the box wireless is plug and play. BUT you must enable security on the router/lan card. If you dont before you know it everyone in the street will be using your wireless connection to get to the net.

1 x wireless ADSL router/hub about £65, linksys / zoom

3 x usb wireless "cards"

That's it :D

Linksys are easy to use Jon? You know how simple I am.

Mannyo, I'm guessing the destructions will have detailed how-to on putting security on?

Should I buy it all from the same manufacturer or not worry too much as long as I have heard of them.

Thanks

Linksys are a piece of cake, as are all the others. As Manny says, they are pretty much plug and pray ;)
