1.2tsi spark plugs

Featured Replies

Im a new owner, please advice how do I remove the spark plugs from the 1.2tsi engine and which plug is number 1. Any help appreciated.

Most engines refer to number 1 cylinder as at the crankshaft pulley end ( opposite to the gearbox ).

Best to use a 3/8" drive deep spark plug socket, you can check the size by fitting one of the replacement plugs into it.

My tip:- do this job when engine is cold.

The tinware in front of the numbers 2-4 plugs looks as if you need to remove it but, it would seem, a lot of dismantling is necessary to remove this. I managed without.

I use a deep (spark plug) socket WITH a rubber insert (to grip the plug) to remove the used plugs and to enter the new ones, then I use a socket WITHOUT a rubber insert for final tightening so it doesn't get stuck on the newly fitted plug when you remove the extension bar. Haynes Manual tip:- use a piece of hose over the new plug to enter it down the cylinder head tube ( instead of a socket)to avoid the risk of cross threading the new plug - saving BIG problems!

Best to torque the new plugs.

Finally, there is a special grease for the rubber plug caps to avoid them getting stuck onto the plugs making the job simpler next time. Get from VW/Skoda parts people.

Anything not clear? Come back with any questions.

Hope this helps.
