Need advice on how to proceed following an incident

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Need some advice if that's okay.

This evening, my girlfriend was accused of pulling a manoeuvre which caused another driver to swerve and 'scuff his £1400 alloy on the pavement'.

We both know it's BS - the circumstances at the time dictate that if the scuff was caused by hitting that bit of pavement, it was because he was trying to squeeze through a small gap too quickly- but as it's early in her first policy, I stupidly gave the guy £90 to 'cover the cost of a refurb' to stop him trying to make an insurance claim against her.

I got the guy's plate but it's a personalised one and the MOT history doesn't add up. There's multiple entries for the last couple of years and mileages aren't in order. He claims he bought the car 2 weeks ago and that it was mint but it's a 7 year old model with over 120,000 on the clock so I'm calling bull on all of that. Also told me he wouldn't speak with a woman about it.

Don't expect to get my cash back but the guy's clearly a scammer. Do I have any rights? Can I check his story about buying the car 2 weeks ago? Can I find out his details? In the shock of the moment I forgot to take his name.

Any help appreciated. Don't wanna post details that are too specific at this stage as I'm considering going to the police.

Sadly I think you are best writing off £90 and getting on with life.

I suspect you handing over £90 so readily was the Green Light for him to proceed with bigger and more elaborate claims.

If it were me, I'd write off the £90 and (assuming you paid him in cash) if it proceeds, deny all knowledge of ever giving him anything. How would he prove you paid him?

Hang on wont talk to a woman about it? Was he english?

You'll not see the £90 and I doubt you will ever hear from him again. Probably wasn't even insured.

Though there are some backward British Yorkshire folk no real Yorkshireman would have a £1400 alloy. He probably wasn't born here with that attitude.

I'd be reporting the incident to the police. You've done nothing wrong and at the very least they can check the reg and might give him some grief about MOTs, mileage, and whatever other weasel wrong-doing he's up to.

Doing nothing is not an option IMHO because if you do nothing, feckless n'er do wells like this just keep getting away with it.

Report it and then get on with enjoying your Christmas. Pick it up in the new year

I'd report too.  Imagine if he's conning a load of people out of £90 all day long?

He wasn't White British, I'll give you that.

Not bothered about my £90 but gonna report it to the Police. Cheers all.

If you've paid up and heard no more then move on, guessing he's not been in contact with the police either. I'm sure they won't be chasing you up on the matter either even if he has reported, I doubt he's done any more, like contact insurance etc.

Regarding the MOT history of a car. I checked my MOT history (MX-5) as I had transferred a personal reg over to it from another MX-5 I had sold. The MOT history was a complete mess, they had mixed the 2 cars history and it made no sense whatsoever. After a few emails to them I have now had it sorted, apparently this has happened to a few I have read about. So your man's car may have had the same thing happen to his MOT history, as you say it was a personal reg.

I have to say though, the way you describe your experience with this chap I am not suprised, especially now after the post above
