DRLs not working

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've got an Octavia II (2012 model).  It comes with the DRLs as separate bulbs on the front fog lamp cluster.  It seemed to have stopped working a while ago thought I'd noticed it recently.

There are no warnings on the cluster and the bulbs seem fine.  I can also see the option to enable/disable the DRL on the instrument cluster menu but this doesnt have any effect on the DRL; it simply doesnt light up.

I did a VCDS scan but there are no errors reported and the coding seems fine, i.e. the DRL options including the "DRL using separate bulbs" are also checked.

All the other lights including the rear fog lamps are working fine.

Any thoughts?

regards,

Nitin

Have they ever worked?

When I had a Mk2 with these bulbs they were not set up to work.

Eactly the the same on my 2012 model.

Easy to fix through the diagnostic port with a reader and the Carister app for iPhone or Android.

Search on here for Carister in many threads.

I fixed mine in minutes including adding coming home lights and wiper functions.

Indeed yes, they had worked before.

How would Carister help?  I had checked using VCDS and found the coding okay.  Could this be anything to do with the infamous byte 18 issue?  As I'd mentioned before, ALL the other lights are fine, except for the front DRLs.  By the way, is it "Carister" or "Carista"?

Yes, this could easily be a byte 18 issue.

Have you ever changed byte 18 or had the BCM changed?

When I set up my DRLs with Carista it was a two two part process - first choose the fitted DRLs rather than fogs etc, secondly choose Activate DRLs. Is it a similar two stage process with VCDS?

I once scanned a vRS where the drls had stopped working. The coding was right and no faults were logged. Turned out the BCM was defective.

Hmmm, something isn't quite right here, there have been loads of threads on Octavia's with DRL's fitted but not working. They weren't activated from the factory for cars destined for the UK. Once activated (using VCDS) the option to turn them on and off became active i.e. using the indicator stalk (on cars without Maxidot) or accessing the menu in Maxidot.

The fact that on this car they used to work, and the option to turn them on and off remains visible in Maxidot suggests something else has gone wrong.

Like Langers2k and Trundlenut suggest it sounds like a BCM related issue..?

I had replaced the BCM two years ago but everything was fine then.  I believe the DRLs stopped working some 3-6 months ago as thats when I'd noticed these.  As for the BYTE 18, how can we find the correct value?  I'd changed from the default value to 38 (which had worked for a few others with L&K)  but everything except the DRLs work perfect..

This could be a possibility that I'm suspecting.  Did the DRLs worked fine when you replaced the BCM?

This appears to be my case as well. The L&K sold in India do have the DRL activated from the factory.   I'd also noticed one more L&K where the DRLs were not working but at the same time, it did not appear in the maxidot as well.  Would it be of any good if I had it "factory" coded using the VAS system at the dealer?

Looks like the fiddling with byte 18 could be the cause. The dealer tool or vag can pro may be able to sort it.

With the vRS I scanned it was fine after the BCM was changed. With the defective one the dealer couldn't code the drls either.

Another vote here for byte 18, I learnt the hard way.

Can we ascertain this to be a byte 18 issue, as I can see the option to enable/disable the DRL on the maxidot though the DRLs do not light up.  However, if I selected the option on VCDS, "DRLs via fog lamp", everything works fine.

What would be the possible options of byte 18 to try out?

I'm also putting the BCM scan as below:

No concrete ideas from anyone?

Haven't had chance to look further in to the lcode you provided, setting drl via fogs doesn't sound right. If everything is working correctly then great!

The stock lcode for my car with drl and maxidot is 48000AB8E05BB1C040080080110001E4437000AE726D85605C8440000040

As its the same module I'd compare them for any obvious differences and go from there.

If you have access to ODIS-e or VCP you could dump the lighting configuration. That'll confirm if it's a byte 18 issue or not...

Please add a full autoscan in future as it'll make it easier.

I've had a closer look, your byte 14 and 17 look a mess - unless you really do have shuttered HIDs which never an option for the O2 FL.

From your scan:

4E180AB8E82508C0C048008011008BE441FD0000722085605C8440000040

I'd try

4E180AB8E82508C0C0480080110091E441F80000722085605C8440000040

It's entirely possible that you've messed up the BCM when you tried 38 for byte 18... If the lcode above doesn't help then you will need to get hold of ODIS-e or VCP to investigate further.

I realise you say the bulbs 'seem fine' but have you checked that it's not as simple as two blown bulbs?

A blown bulb/s would result in a warning light / message on the dashboard.

That's a very good point Silver. Is the OP the only driver? SWMBO may have dismissed the warnings?... Haha

Hi, I just have the same Problem...I would like to know if you have fixed it..

Many thanks in advanced.

Got a VCDS autoscan?

Did they ever work?

Have you changed anything?

Can you post the autoscan to take a look at?

Do you mean that you've installed xenon headlights with levelling and now the DRL don't work?

Exactly...

I will make the scan and send it.
