Folding rear seats down in estate

Featured Replies

Just been experimenting with loading my car and realised that if you pull out the rear headrests to their fullest extent the rear seats fold almost flat!

This gives me room for an extra three boxes! Now it will actually hold more than an E class!!

I guess this applies to the hatchback as well.

I don't know about the Superb 3, but you can actually remove the head restraints in the Octy 1, and when you do the rear seat folds completely flat.

Yes you can remove them but you need a screwdriver! bit annoying, but they pull out far enough anyway, removing them wouldn't really make it any flatter.

I haven't tried it in my S3 hatch, but in my S2 estate you could fold the rear seat squabs forward into the footwell, allowing the rear seats to go completely flat with just a small raised lip. If you had the variable boot floor you didn't even have the lip.

It was a bit annoyong that you needed a screwdriver to release the centre headrest so I have solved the problem

I filled the catch slot with some car body filler (it can easily be removed if needed) so now it can be released with no tools.

This lets the backrest fold completely flat.

I just use the end of the car key to remove it. Fits perfectly.

Personally i would not advise amending it, in the event of a hard front impact the head rest if not lockable could be forced out from its position hitting a rear or face passenger.

Lose debris in the cabin is never good.

It's still locked when it is down.

Had not thought of that!, as I said I can easily poke out the filler to put It back to normal, might do that now!

Funny, I folded the seats in mine today and couldn't get the middle headrest out beyond the 1" it does move. I saw the slot and guessed what it was for.

Think I'd prefer the no tools solution as I quite often fold the seats so may be getting the filler out too.
