Battery going flat over two weeks

Featured Replies

Hi. I have a Skoda Octavia year 2000 (Y) reg. When I do not use the car for about 2 weeks the battery is dead. I charge it up and it goes ok. As I don't use it often it goes flat again after another 2 weeks. I have fitted a new battery but still the same. The only thing that is not working on the car is the N/S/R door which will not open from the inside handle but opens from the outside handle ok. The central locking locks and unlocks all the doors ok. Anyone any ideas what the problem might be as it is very annoying.

The cheap option is to fit one of those battery disconnect plugs (under a £5), and take it out if you don't plan to use the car for the next day or so. Obviously alarm etc. can't work.

How soon after fitting the new battery did it start not being able to tolerate not being used regularly? A new battery should have been able to put with breaks of a week or 2 for a while, and then would hold enough charge after 20 minutes driving to cope again. Disconnecting and/or not setting the alarm would help but I suspect another issue, have you checked the alternator and the loading on battery with car running?

As an example I'd be surprised if I got back to the airport after 2 weeks away and needed a jump start to get home, I don't think that should happen.

First double check that the boot light isn't illuminated all the time

Process of elimination with using the ammeter setting of a multimeter to measure current drain. Then remove/replace each fuse in turn to diagnose

Common causes of this sort of drain tend to be courtesy and boot lights, or things that should be powered down in ignition position 0 such as stereos actually being on a permanent live.

It actually usually the Central Convenience Unit gone bad, which is near impossible to diagnose, and an uneconomic repair.
