I think it was only low valts on slow cold crank but I will let you know after the next cold start cheers kev.

The starter motors have been known to fail from time to time on these.

When we first got our car we had a new starter motor fitted under warranty.

Hope this fixes your problem.

Just been out to start the car and there is snow all over it so this will qualify as a cold start and she started with a flick of the key so looks like job done.when I whent to pick my car up the mechanic told me that he had put his diagnostic machine on it and it was showing that two of my glow plugs where not up to scratch so I was a little worried the car would be the same this morning has it was before struggling to start but no fired in to life like it should.so how much dose the starting process depend on the glow plugs? It is the 2.0 pd engine we are talking about just so you know.

The other question I was going to ask is how hard is it to change the glow plugs my self I have only ever changed plugs that are on the out side with a buz bar connecting them sorry if that not the right name that's what I called them.

Apparently the plugs are in the rocker box,I have tried to find something on YouTube that will show me what to do but finding anything to do with skoda's is hard.

Cheers kev.

P.s just been looking on the bay for glow plugs to give me some idea of price and it was comming up with all shapes and sizes and saying they all will fit a 2.0 tdi skoda lol can any one tel me what plugs I would need for my car 2.0 140 Bhp engine code bkd ?

That sounds good! Glad it seems to have cured it.

I would search for "BKD glow plugs" on eBay. Go for Bosch ones.

They should only be about £10 each.

Changing the glow plugs is not as simple as you'd imagine. As you say the rocker cover has to come off to get to them and from memory one of the rocker cover bolts a the back is very hard to access due to part of the egr valve being in the way. Also to guarantee no leaks when you put it back together you should replace the rocker cover gasket.

For these reasons you might as well replace all 4 plugs while you're at it.

I was intending to replace all four

Is it doable my self?

And when you say a rocker cover bolt is hard to accsess do I need a special tool to accsess it ?

Or dose the egr need removing ?

And can anyone give me the torque wrench settings for the rocker cover ?

And the glow plug settings?

Cheers lads kev.

After a bit of resurch is it right that I will need boch/beru 4.4v or 7v ?

And the torque setting for the plugs is the same as the rocker cover 10nm ?

And to warm the engine before carrying the work out ?

Please advise cheers kev.

Hi chaps any one tel me what voltage glow plugs I need please I have read 4.4v and 7v which one is right?

And the torque setting for the plugs?

And the torque setting for the rocker cover please?

I think it's something I can have a go at my self Cheers lads kev.

Not sure of which plug you need sorry. But the recommended torque is 10nm for the plugs;

Plug removal and refitting;

And the cylinder head is also 10nm;

Edit:

After some googling of "BKD glow plugs" all the results from places selling them and a couple of other forums all mention the 4.4v ones so I assume it's those you need.

Cheers phil your a gent and thanks to all the other lads for there help atb kev.

Glow plugs preheat cylinder before starting and also run on after start to bring cylinder temps up as quick as possible to ensure best combustion. They are needed on a cold start otherwise the load on the starter motor increases a fair bit and the engine will really struggle without them to start or if one or two are abit iffy. It will obviously tax the battery in the above situation too than needs be. Clutch in the start lessens load and can help when its cold out

Finally got around to changing the glow plugs today I ended up getting some beru glow plugs for it, I was a little apprehensive doing them as I have only ever done plugs that where on the outside with a buz bar connecting them together.anyway the job was easy enough to do just a little fiddley,it took me 45 minuets from start to Finish so if yours need doing have a go your self it's easy enough to do and will save you a phew quid.

Atb kev.
