SDI timing belt - changing/cost

Featured Replies

As title says really. What kind of mileage should the belt be changed at, and how much would I be looking at dishing out

cheers guys

I had mine changed at just under 60k and paid £325 just for the belt plus tensioners at my usual (non franchise) garage so saved £75 compared to the £400 main dealer quote but still not cheap.

Not an SDI, but my TDI cost me about

is it something I could do myself? I am competent with a socket set

Uhhh, no, not really! The timing belt is the last thing you want to DIY unless you REALLY know what you're doing. If it snaps because of incorrect fitting then your engine is as good as wrecked.

Should I buy genuine parts? If so where from?

If not, where from?

www.eurocarparts.co.uk does a bosch timing belt for under 20 quid also rollers are cheap these prices quotedin here are ridiculus you would be stupid to pay 400 quid

It is arguably worth changing the water pump at the same time since if it fails you stand the chance of blowing the head gasket. My neighbour - who is a dab hand at car DIY - changed the cambelt on his Audi A4 1.8T. Unfortunately he fitted the wrong belt which then failed and resulted in major damage to the top end of the engine. He thought he had managed to fix that by replacing all the broken/damaged parts only to have the engine fail on him in a big way when he next went on a long journey. He now needs to buy a new engine for it. :(
